Starting an herb garden - most useful herbs?

So I'm thinking ill start an herb garden, maybe with some CFLs if needed, but this will probably be in the window sill.

I'm currently experimenting with curing some mint leaves bought at the store to supplement my meds in a volcano vaporizer. This is mainly for taste, to spike it up.

But these mint leaves had me thinking about starting a small herb garden. But I would like something that is somewhat useful or something that looks nice and smells nice, does anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking of growing Datura, but then im like, "nawwww"

General question: Given a large enough pot, 3 or 4 gallons, can you pretty much grow any plant with lights (CFLs or otherwise) indoors?

I was thinking a pepper plant might be cool, but that struck me as an outdoor plant

Thanks :bigjoint:

(This is my first post in the garden section btw)

Mint is easy to grow. some even complain it spreads to fast.
Some plant it between stepping stones so it will smell as the leaves are crushed w/ footsteps.

sweet basil smells nice.
oregano and parsley are useful.
depends on your recipes really.
dill is useful if you make your own pickles. mmmm homemade pickles are the best.

i would bet many herbs could be grown under lights.
probably some peppers as well.

some stuff i gathered off the net.
Herbs that will thrive indoors include mint, rosemary, chamomile, lavender, basil and oregano.

If your most convenient window location does not have enough sunlight, you can supplement natural lighting with fluorescent light. In general, for every hour of required sunlight, expose the plants to two hours of fluorescent light. Herbs grown entirely under fluorescent lights will require between 14 to 16 hours of artificial lighting. Place herb plants no closer than five or six inches and no farther than 15 inches from the light source.
^^ this doesn't specify which type of fluorescent.

Having never grown herbs under lamps i was curious.
Googling 'growing herbs indoors' turned up many nice articles.
google also turned up some articles on growing peppers indoors.
it can be done.

Everybody should have basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary and chives. Look at what you eat, eat Mexican, grow cilantro, etc. And its a great opportunity to try new things chervil and tarragon are great.

sage, purple basil, dill have all turned out great for me. Great for cooking and aroma's. Start in the winter and move outdoors. BTW sage is a bushy plant growing through out the year its hard to kill.

You can grow peppers indoors! In fact, a lot of home and garden shops now have kits for just that in addition to strawberries, tomatoes and herbs. The ones that have a tray and the little soil pucks all ready to use are great! Like others have said, it depends on the type of cooking you do, but parsley, basil, chives, oregano, etc are a few I use all the time.
