Sq. Ft. per plant?

I know there are numerous factors that could influence the answer...but here is the question anyway...

In an ideal world, growing in large pots with soil, standard grow (not SoG), is there a general rule as to how many square feet of horizontal space a single plant needs to grow?

I transplant up to 3gal and aim for 2x2'. Sometimes it's a little cramped.

I'm in a 2gal right now and it's becoming cramped after 12/12 stretch. It's not very tall either (in a 4' tall tent. But, it went wide.).

Vertical is no issue. I have 9' to play with there.

Since 2x2 gets a bit cramped, if you had the space, how much bigger would you go? 2.5'x2.5'? 3'x3'?

I have a 4x4 7'-tall tent too. I aim for four plants in that too (in 3gal containers). Sometimes 5, but that doesn't work well.

If I had a 3x3 tent, I might "mainline" (see growweedeasy dot com) one plant and grow a single big one.
