Sperating roots from soil?

get them out of the container, pot, whatever so you are holding the rootball in your hand. gently crush the ball with your fingers. dirt should start falling off. try not to break the roots(you'll probably break some of the small ones. also, try in in a bucket of water. the dirt should start "melting" off the ball. You might not get it all out but you should be able to get 95%. a little left won't hurt.

Yes, I had them in soil in 16 oz cups. When the time came I made a V with my index and middle finger, turned it over, let as much dirt fall as I could while protecting the roots and rinsed the root with tap water. Filled a net pot about a third of the way with hydrotron, laid my bare plant roots over the rocks and gently filled the netpot with the pebbles like one or two at a time keeping the plant centered. When filled to the top with hydrotron it's very stable and ready to go.

Or you can fill a pot with hydroton in the bottom and put the seedling on top. Fill it with hydrton all around it. Then just handwater is for a week. the roots will take hold of a good portion of the clay. Then put it in your system.
