I'm about to start my second grow. I was wondering if i can keep my 400w HID atleast a foot away from the tops of my plants the whole grow so the footprint of the light hits all the tops. My last grow i had my light so close i feel like the tops around the edges of my scrog didn't get sufficient light. Thanks for any help

Good starting point - use the "back-of-hand" method but hand over the top of plant ; leave for a minute if hand (back) becomes to hot for you move light up. Another thing to remember is you ventilation system -fans, ect will help with heat issues -no mention of fans

Sorry for not explaining it better, I have a air cooled hood and my issue isn't heat i just want to know if a foot is too far away

No; it's not to far concerning your light - one might have to move it up some after a while. There are sites that give you the recommended heights for lights -let me know if you want them!

No. A foot is not too far away. I pulled a half pound from three plants under a 400w on my very first indoor grow and at times, the lamp was higher than 12" above.

My 400w is usually 10-12" away. Often I'll have some strains that grow taller than others, so the shorter ones are sometimes up to 18" below, and they still fruit beautifully (not optimal, but it still works).
