Some Odor Opinions?

Hello I'm recently a new member but long time browser of this site. I have searched all through this site and haven't really found an answer to this question of mine. Does anyone here know of a legitimate way to mask odors or control the smell of a small 4 plant closet grow that would have no way to ventilate or run it through a large filter system. Once again it cannot vent out so I would need something to "clean" the stagnant air within the closet. Yes there is a fan inside so the air inside isn't stagnant as much as just not allowed to leave the closet.

Any suggestions at all? Please keep suggestions relatively cheap (under 60 bucks). Thank you all.

Thats not very conducive to plant growth. You need to have air exchange to give them CO2, and help with transpiration. As the plants do their thing, they take in CO2 and give off O2. They also transpire moisture thru the leaves.
Sounds like you're either in a "dorm room" environment, or living at home. Either way, just wait until you are in your own place. If you're in a Dorm situation, your education is way more important than getting a bag or 2 of pot. I do believe that they would have something negative to say about you growing in their bldg. It's just not worth the expulsion that would probably come down.

In my own place/rental so I don't want to cut holes and vent out. I am not worried about any expulsions and also the plants look amazing. Nothing wrong with them whatsoever so far and its been a good 25 days mate. I'm really just looking for an alternative other than cutting a hole in the ceiling to vent to the attic and/or making a grow box and venting that through a carbon scrubber. Maybe some sort of standalone filter? Idk i'll let you guys think about this maybe you have better ideas?

a simple way to control odors......
Get a 5 gallon bucket.
Buy a pack or 2 of diapers.
poke some holes around the 5 gallon bucket (you need a lid too).
Cut a hole in the top of the container to place the fan on top, pulling air out.

Put the beads from the diaper in a container, and add some water (not to much), and let them absorb it. Now add something like febreeze or something too (reduce odor) to the beads. Now place them in the 5 gallon bucket, place the lid on, and turn it on.
It may not reduce all the odors, but it will definitely help.

remember your gonna have to redue this every so often....

I've tried what your wanting to accomplish here. I've spent about $200 and have yet to find a method that completely eliminates the odor!

I even made a DIY carbon filter and al though it helped I still have a slight odor.

Even if you can't vent out in theory you could purchase a carbon filter and just pull the air through the carbon filter and let it vent back into the closet. I'm not sure if this would eliminate the odor (possibly if you had a pretty kick ass fan), but I'm sure it would help.

Good luck!

I plan on upgrading to a real carbon filter and a nice exhaust fan after this harvest =]

What do you mean by cut a hole in top of the container? What container? If you are talking about a grow box then I dont have one.... but other than that this sounds intriguing none the less.

Sounds like you have had some experience with this. What have you found to work the best for you in this situation then?

Oh and if someone wants some advice if they are in the same situation as me I would tell them to make a grow box that fits their dimensions and don't forget about how much verticle space the lights will take up so build accordingly. What I have been doing to reduce smells is burning incense within the grow room and letting it trickle out from the door frame along with the smell of green. I also lined the frame of my door with a sheet and it seems to block some of the smell as well, as well as adding some random dryer sheets in places.

I own 3 of these filters now!
1~NEW~ IONIC UV AIR PURIFIER TOWER BREEZER PRO CLEANER - eBay (item 110311642374 end time Nov-17-08 11:32:25 PST)

I have one inside my cabinet, one right outside my cabinet, and one outside the closet my cabinet is in. It def helps, but I still need to open the closet frmo time to time and let some of the stink out (it can get quite potent).

I have the febreeze plugin air freshners all over my house (really helps). I just put one in the closet and it helped a good bit also.

If I had to recommend something I'd to the febreeze bucket somewhere in your room, and probably one of those filters in the closet, and maybe another in your room.

All depends on your budget, and how much of a concern odor is too you.

Okay. You would need a 5 gallon bucket, and the lid. On the lid you cut one hole for the fan to go (pulling air our of the bucket). On the sides of the bucket you poke many small holes towards the bottom (were all the beads are). The holes shouldnt be above the line of the beads (im calling them beads cause i dont know there exact name). The beads can hold alot of water, and if you add some febreeze or vanilla, or what ever you would like it to smell like, to the water it will reduce the odor alot.

That still doesn't address the stagnant air issue. I know you said you've got fans, but all they will do is move stagnant air. You have to have a complete air exchange every so often, once every 5 min I believe, in that space to supply needed co2, and remove humidity from transpiration.
I'm in my own place too, and didn't want to cut holes or anything, just a quiet closet grow. Well, the closet no longer exists, and the grow has expanded to half (or more) of the room with new wiring, plumbing, carpet ripped out and massive lights and ventilation.
It's just a matter of which is more important to you, growing dope, or pretty walls. In MY case, the dope won.
But you gotta ventilate. You cannot just grow them in stagnant air and expect them to thrive.

Ok just a few updates and randomness I want to share. Most of the time this odor control will only be needed for planned days when im having people who do not appreciate marijuana smells all over the place, for example today I had maitenance come out and fix some shit in my bedroom, where my closet was. Well he didn't notice the smell at all, burned some incense in the grow room and kept it closed with fan off. It worked well he was gone in a couple of hours and now im free to keep it open again. As far as CO2 production I have no idea about any of that im letting them grow however they feel. So far they are doing amazingly well I am astonished. Flowered at 8 inches, 2weeks 2 days, and now its day 11 of flowering and still only the single pistils are showing at the node, but double in size already.... Holy shit! Just wondering when bud production will set in heavily?

Towards the end of week 3 of flowering my plants stopped almost all vertical growth...buds began fattening up and i saw more & more bud sites...

i was told most plants stop most of their vertical growth by this point...not sure if this is true for all strains, but out of all my bag seeds most seemed to stop growing at that point.

good luck!

just keep in mind when you dont control whom comes in & out of your place smell is a big issue..never safe leaving your grow room open for anyone to view if they should happen to enter your place unexpected...

dont want to walk in late drunk one night and have some skank see your operation =O

my cabinet is about silent right now, and just about stink free!

once this harvest finishes i will be upgrading my intake & exhaust fan, and adding a nice 17pound carbon filter! I will also be adding some sound reducing material to my whole cabinet to cut down on noise from the upgraded fans

i'll let you know how it goes

=]

BEST OF LUCK!
