ok i know i need certin stuff for my soil but i cant afford to buy anything else at the moment
i will have a wilma system soon with clay pebbles ect

my question is i have pearlite and shamrock potting compost if i mix it 3/1 shamrock compost soil to perlite will that do for now , i know mosspete and pearlite workes pretty well

any help before i mix it up please

some information on shamrock potting compost

  • Shamrock Potting compost contains at least 30% more nutrients than Standard Multipurpose Compost
  • For potting on a wide range of bedding pot plants basket and container

  • Contains a specialised fertiliser with 50% slow release nitrogen which feeds plants for up to six weeks
  • Balance of nutrients and trace elements added:?::?::?:
i use ionic nutrients im just looking at the post again maybe the potting compost with lots of nutrients in it is a bad idea

You are going to have to be very careful with your nutrients. Using soil with slow release fertilizer and additional fertilizer will be hard to manage and you will probably nutrient burn them. Imo use a soil less sphagnum peat moss if you want to fertilize manually.

As for your question: I find a 4:1 mix pretty good. If you have higher humidity, up it to 3:1. You want your soil to dry out in a reasonable time so that the roots can get oxygen.

The fertilizers are usually time release so flushing it probably wont help that much not too mention you will drown the roots.

Peat moss and perlite at close to a 2:1 ratio is a good start. I would add some natural un-dyed mulch (not cedar) and some bone and blood meal. They're only a few dollars each and well worth it. Also I would add dolomite lime to balance pH. That will get you a basic potting mix that works well with cannabis and a lot of other veggies and herbs too.

Start a compost pile and with only a few dollars to start it up (shortcut) you can have cheap, actually nearly free soil that wont need much of anything for ferts. Get a bag or two of peat moss, a bag of compost, and a bag of mushroom compost, mix all that up with natural soil ( a bucket or two full of dark, rich, old forest soil is best, myco levels are usually higher in that type of soil). Form the compost pile into a bowl shape with a deep center. Throw Any table scraps (except for red meats and citrus), egg shells, coffee grounds, newspaper strips, mulch, branches from yard, grass trimmings, and some molasses (every once in a while) into the pit in the center and pile in a layer of compost from around the bowl, on top of the scraps. Keep it moist and dark, and keep the food scraps always completely buried. In a few weeks to a month you will have awesome organic compost you can use by its self (of course mixed with perlite at the same ratio as above), or as a base with heavy feeders.
