Instead of using a purchased potting soil as a base soil, can I go out in the woods and use that dirt from out there. I mean the trees there have beeen growin long and strong for several decades so I only assume it has the appropriatebeneficial microbes and what not. Is this a correct assumption?

Any help or response would b much appreciated, thanks.

i wouldnt do so, u say ur trees there are long and strong and decades old , ur plants will be little and weak in beginning and some days or weeks old.....
think noone can tell you because only you have this soil, u will only know if u try, probably it will also work, probably good or not so good,
but there is also the chance that you import something that dont harms the trees but your plants, and then you sit there at the end with nothing and was weeks busy with the plants......
dont know what u have to pay for soil, here it cost 7-8 euros for 50 liter light soil from atami/biobizz/plagron etc..... and if i think what i get out of it at the end its really no problem to pay that little price in the beginning.....

...if you ask from the organic aspect, that you want to know 100% where it comes from and that there is really non-organic shit inside, then i would sterilize it by heating and use later some ecto/endo/bacteria soil innoculent to get life back in there

but also want to know if someone have tried out forest soil with sterilization, because i live next to forest, can imagine that you have to dig a little bit deeper for some good soil ready to use...

If you are growing indoors ->NOOO!!! Way different soil for trees than herb. Ganja is a fast growing annual plant. Trees are slow growing perennials. You can use some woods dirt, depending on where you live the soils can be WAY different. The bag mix that sub starts out with is designed for growing ganja and this sets him/us up for success. You can buy bulk potting mix from the nursery for cheaper, but I would stick to either Roots, FoxFarm, BioTerra Plus, Just Right Xtra, or any of the pre-mixes pH balanced for growing ganja.

Thanks for both responses, I never thought of those very important factors. The info I have gotten here at RIU has been great.

Hey Matt I just read a great article on veganics in this month's High Times, and currently reading through ur blog. Do you know of any veganic alternatives for the bat guana and maybe even the earth worm castings? I am planning my second outdoor grow and am not sure on the best growing methods for myself yet.

Hey, my twin sister ava rize wrote that article. kushman and i work on veganics together. my vegan organics thread is here:
https://www.rollitup.org/organics/364864-vegan-organics-professor-matt-veganics.html

I use humboldt nutes natural bloom 0-10-0 for Phos source indoors, and I've convinced Kushmang to do the same. EWC is all good (IMO) for veganics if you make them yourself using vegetarian sources.

For outdoor I would mix in plenty of soft rock phosphate, maybe a nice mix of plant based meals. Good soil, with plenty of air and compost is good too. I am more experienced with indoors so my help on outdoors in limited.

tell your sis and kushman great article!!! really enjoyed reading it and it makes tons of sense. i hope to do a side by side vegan vs sub super soil soon.
rize, have you and kushman thought about creating a veganic super soil? just add water...

as for the original post just get roots... when getting 8 bags at a time it should be like $10 a bag

That's awesome, I am actually going to use HN's entire organic line for all of our food (tomatoes, watermelons, green beans, and etc.) I'll also be doing some experimenting with it on some of our medicine. I would love to grow indoors, but I just worry about providing enough medicine in 1 to 2 grows for the year. If you don't mind, I will be spending rest of tonight reading your blog and then your veganics thread here on RIU, I would love to ask a few questions.

All and any questions are welcome. My vegan organics thread is long, so if you ask something I already answered it is no problem, I know how it goes. Peace.

I don't know exactly what roots costs, but you should be getting a 20% discount from your local shop... And I use Bio Terra Plus, the most expensive media around... its so worth it for high end ingredients used.

dang, then you pay double. find the closest distributor possible. or go with something local, any organic potting mix will work out decent, may need to check it's pH, the bag should say.
