Soil and Bubbleponic CFL grow

This isn't my first grow, but its my kind bud and bubbleponic grow. eventually i will post some pictures from my first grow, which i recorded with pictures very well (daily).

At the moment i have two kind bud plants that just sprouted a few days back in soil, with all 6500K light on them. when they get some real leaves i'll throw in a 2700K. i usually start in solo cups and then move to an intermediate size pot before moving into storage tubs where they finish out their lives. i dont think i'll go back to using solo cups due to the fact its just one more move they have to make, and i figure i dont need to worry about space yet either.

My second batch will be starting tomorrow with germination and will be in a bubbleponi set-up. i live in a tiny town in nebraska so i have tractor supply company, menards, and walmart to work with. i know i'll have to make a run to Omaha to get nutes and medium and some other things, but i figure i can wait til the weekend to get all that good stuff.

Basic plan for the BP is going to be the common storage tub setup, dont really think i need to go into detail about that. tomorrow when i'm done with everything i'll load pictures of my setup, for now i'll load a few from my previous grows.

(I realize my seeds from last night are not going to be the testers for the system, however they will be used for my bending experiment that i am taking on!)

Well i started work on the new system today, however my tiny ass town only allows me to choose from Walmart and Menards... However i was able to get just about everything except a few parts, the systes itself is built!

Went with the storage tub (on sale at walmart now for 3.50), from there i found some rubbermaid containers to hold the plant. I only have put holes on the bottom of the pot, should i put them on the sides as well??? from there i put aluminum tape on the top of the lid, and the lids of the pots. that basically covers construction i guess.

i bought an air pump, however i dont like the output so i'll be trading that for the bigger one tomorrow. i have two air stones on the bottom, and i'm not sure how i will affix them to the bottom yet. i have heard and seen people using fishing weights, but most of those are made of lead and that doesnt sound pleasing to me to have lead in my babies' water. i was thinking of hot gluing them to the bottom. if anyone has any suqqestions on good ways to attach the airstone to the bottom feel free to let me know!

my Wally world doesnt carry any water pumps so i will be hitting up the pet store and earl may tomorrow to find one of those. i was wondering where i might be able to find a distributor, hopefully the pet store? i dont know if that would be a common item or not i guess.

Other than that, i have to order a few things tonight and hope they make it here soon. i'm missing rockwool, medium, and nutrients. my walmart literally took the rockwool off the shelves sometime between last wed. and today, needless to say i was upset.

I also made a little reflector for my cfl's tonight. i took some posterboard and covered one side with aluminum tape and curled it around being held in place by pipe cleaners. the idea was a modified version of icurbyou's (link). so far its working pretty well, i'm checking it quite a bit for heat, i'm skeptic of the poster board.

i'll load some pictures of the new hydro setup and the new light. while i'm down there i'll take one of the room to show you just how well you can stretch your money and be a true DIYer.

My questions i asked, if anyone is following this, were:
The holes in the baskets are only the bottom side, is that good or should i put some on the sides?
What is a good way of attaching the air stones to the bottom?
where do you find the distributor for the water pump?

Went and exchanged my air pump, however i am still skeptical on how much air it pumps out. i have the Tetra Whisper Air pump for the 30-60 gallon aquarium, i know a lot of people have these, i was just wondering if its sufficient air.

i'm buying the remaining bits for my system that i cant find/make today.

bought the rest of my supplies, so now its just a matter of time until i can start! went and got the water pump and "irrigation manifold" offline as well, figured its better to come from them then try and find it and have to order them 3 days later. my helper gave my a few new ideas for my reflector set up so i'll be screwing around with that today and post some pictures of what i decided on.

***Anyone is welcome to comment/answer questions on this journal!!!***

Added seeds that germinated from a couple days ago. I had to rearrange the room a little. i also switched the reflector over the kb seeds and made a new one for the new bagseeds.

the new one is an extra lid from a storage tub with aluminum tape covering most of the bottom. i then attached two power strips to it and plugged the lights strait in, they stick in the sockets pretty well so i'm not worried about them falling.

Pic 1 - New set up in room (original seeds in back)
Pic 2- New light setup
Pic 3- how it have to it setup for the time being
Pic 4- New reflector for the KB, bot have 2 26Ws one 6500K on 2700K

Well the parts for my bubbleponic system should be in on Wednesday. tomorrow I'll germinate some more seeds to be ready for when it all gets here. My two KB plants had some yellowing of their first leaves (not sure if it was from light set-up or what but i took the reflector off and the new leaves are looking great. i planted 3 others and they've all broke the surface and are lookin great. should be loading new pictures wed. with a completed set-up!

Put the cube 2/3 to 3/4 up from the bottom of the cup and butt the tube into the side of the cube.

Remove the plastic and I hope you read to soak the cubes. You really need to read the first ten pages here:

Nice to c ur grow man!!! i was planning on doing a grow like this, but i was doubting about it b-cus i never saw a hydro done with cfl in a small room. Now that i have seen urs i definitely convinced to start a grow too. But do you have a EC meter(i only have a ph-M). Anywayz Subscribed!

Peace Mr.Son

realbud, thanks for subscribin' but yea roseman's setup is the pinnacle when Hydro + CFL's are considered. I dont have an EC Meter, and probably wont get one for a while if ever. i am a budget grower ( you can see by the pictures!) and that is something that isnt too high of a priority for me.

Roseman i sprayed the room really well. i live in a pretty old house and the basement is an insect sanctuary, so far i havent had any problems with bugs in my past grows (Knocking on wood).

The one thing i've learned from this site and on my own is have everything prepared. Preparation and precaution are very important in this like of work.

**I am waiting on a few more seeds to pop so i can stick em in, but it should be in full swing by tonight, i'll post pictures tonight when i have rearranged the room to accommodate my hydro setup.

Well i have officially started the hydroponic journey as of about an hour and a half ago. got my room all situated and it fits all of them pretty comfortably for now. after all of my preparation and telling others about preparation i did manage to forget one thing...LIGHTS i started to make a reflector and realized that i only had one bulb. decided not to drive out in this weather and stole the bulbs from house lights (last grow's lights) for the meantime.

i have covers for the tops of the baskets but i figured i'd let them get leaves out first.

Questions or comments are much appreciated and here are some pics!

You're going to be amazed at the rapid growth in Hydro, I get a half inch to a full inch of vertical growth daily, every day for 5 weeks. From seed to 30 inches tall in 34 days.
