Soil Aeration

i am a newbie so sorry in advance.
i was reading abit about growing in soil as i am all but set upto do so.
in this article it says its important to aerate the soil.
does anyone know how important this is and how to go about doing it?
i have looked through the faQs but couldnt see anything on this.

It's important and easy. You just want to add some vermiculite or perlite to your soil mix. Hope you're not using "Miracle" Gro; that stuff is not for our kinda plants.

no ive read enough on here to scare me from miracle gro,im using canna complete soil,it has perlite mixed through but dozy me thought that was for drainage or something.if it's for aeration then sooperb...cheers man
