Well i bought a light( This one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=198684288 ) and ballast of an online trading site and was wondering if it is really a metal halide
the bulb is a Phillips 250 w powertone HPI-Plus (Much like this one http://www.freewebs.com/lamps006/Philips 400w HPI-Plus-BUS lamp.jpg except this one is a 400w

When i turn it on it glows redish purple for a couple of seconds then shines like a normal light
So with the information i have given you and your vast knowledge would you be able to tell me if this is an acceptable light to use for veg in a small closet grow
Thanks

what does the bulb say that you are using dude....That is a sure fire way if its a 400 w mh bulb then that is what you have otherwise it would not work in the fixture. Or i see it says yours is a 250 ither way....and yes a mh bulb is good for veg

that's either a mercury vapor or multivapor lamp, which will work fine in a mh ballast. spectrum is bad though, get a mh bulb for far better results. mv is way too blue.
