So you 'Juana Cut Corners, eh? Simple Comparison Grow in Progress...

Hola Rollit!

I’ve started this journal because as a newb I realized that all of my questions didn't really have to do with wanting to know what I was supposed to do, they had to do with knowing just which corners I could cut and how far I could cut them. All of us have so many resources to obtain trustworthy facts about growing, that we sometimes fool ourselves into thinking there are mysteries left to solve, and we seek reaffirmation in someone else who has cut corners successfully. There's nothing wrong with this, in fact sometimes great innovations come from this approach, but I do like a little honesty in all this Internet haze (because we’ve all got plenty better haze to deal with, yeah?).

So, to get to my point, my intent is to display without shame my very first grow wherein so many corners were cut, I can't count them all, and then compare it to my second grow, wherein I hope to have cut no corners at all. I will give you all the candid bits (ha! not cannabis), nothing to cover up my many mistakes, in either grow for that matter - I still do not profess to be anything other than a newb.

Please also be patient with me; I am just now finishing the flowering of my first plant (perhaps two weeks shy of harvest). I will post pics when I get this all figured out, but first I will give you the rundown of the first grow.

Location:
• Seattle, WA
• Indoor
• Winter lows are low 30F
• Summer highs are high 80F
• Humidity is not a huge factor despite the rain, because cool air releases moisture much more quickly than hot air (hence humid Southern climates)

1st Grow:
• 1 plant - 8 Miles High (sativa dominant from Mandala Seeds)
o Healthy clone from reputable MMJ co-op
• http://www.cannabis-seeds-bank.co.uk/mandala-seeds/manadala-seeds-8-miles-high/prod_1046.html

Grow Space:
• Upstairs bedroom closet
o 2'l x 4'w x 5'h
o Flat white walls (great idea if you’re sketched about film and Mylar)
o Carpeted (bad idea – dirt, dust, critters, etc…listen to the literature about cleanliness! I could care less about water damage, there was none.)

Lighting:
• 315w of full range CFL
o 30k, 41k, and a 50k (two spirals and a tube in a shitty "reflector")
o Intended for veg. through harvest
o Advertised to put out 17,000 lumens
• I don't have a light meter, and frankly I don't care - it's not enough light!

Ventilation:
• NO PROPER VENTILATION
• Passive outside air via open window
• No extraction/filtration (no exhausting of heat or spent air)
• One Holmes 10” fan
o static, and blowing from base of closet to top (lights in path)
• Two 8” Holmes oscillating clip-on fans
o one rotating indirectly through canopy
o the other static and blowing hotter upper air out of closet (in hopeful theory)

Growing Setup:
• Hydroponics
• DWC in 5gal black food grade bucket
o 6” net pot bucket lid (these are slick – I bought 10” bucket lids for next grow)
o Clone in 4” rockwool cube surrounded by standard clay balls (packed too tightly, hence the bigger net pot bucket lids for next time)
o 3 gal of nutrient soup
• Run to waste on 1 week (7 day) changing cycles
• Using General Hydroponics three part Flora system with the nutrient calculator on their company’s own website
o During flower the only additive I am using is GH KoolBloom (liquid), again per their own calculator
• I have two 40gal air pumps from local pet shop, independently running through two 5” air stones in bottom of res.
• I have no upper water/nutrient source (i.e.: GH Waterfarm irrigation ring), and I didn’t water or flush from top at all through grow

Measurements (and the tools I use)
• PPMs during early veg. were 400-600
• PPMs during veg. were 900-1000
• PPMs during flower are pushing 1200
o I use a BlueLab Truncheon to measure PPMs/EC (this was an expensive tool, but I trust it very much)
• pH at all times ranged from 5.7 to 6.1
o I use a Eutech Instruments double-junction digital tester for pH testing (again an expensive tool that I trust very much)
• Also very accurately provides temperature in desired setting
o An important note: my frequent reservoir changes are extremely integral to my success in maintaining acceptable pH with very minimal fluctuation
• Nutrient temps were my largest issue, ranging from 72F to 79F (YIKES!)
• Closet temps were actually ideal, ranging between 68F and 80F (I spiked very few times to 84F on our hottest days) – There is no way I could have done this without CFLs
• Relative Humidity also stayed within acceptable ranges of 45% to 60% (throughout grow, not a daily fluctuation)
o Digital Hygrometer from Holmes gives you memory of high low on all measurements (great for spying on midnight lows and midday highs when you can’t be there to check for yourself)
• AND it’s indoor/outdoor, so I dangle the outdoor sensor in my plant canopy and hang the main unit high in the grow space to give two readings – one at plant/light level, the other a general ambient grow space temperature.

Okay...I guess I need some pics!

Thanks chairman; seems this is more for my intrigue than that of others. How local, by the way, if you don't mind whittling down PNW?

Sweet - ready for the winter? I might have to invest in a small heater.
So, here's what's new: for my second grow I have made some purchases.
1 Secret Jardin DR120 Pro II (4'x4'x6.5')
1 6" Can Fan 50 combo with rate matched Can Filter (312 cfm with resistance)
1 400w MH/MPS switchable digital ballast (w/ bulbs of course) in a cooltube (I know, not the best light fixture, but I'm just growing small time)
3 GH Waterfarm irrigation kits for top feeding this time around

For now, I have moved my flowering 8 Mile into the new tent, but retain all other aspects of grow as outlined in the first post. I'll wait for second grow to fully setup extraction, new lights and irrigation. Pics will be posted later today - sorry.

A few pics - as I stated, just swapped closet out for DR120, but everything else stays the same until grow 2 (don't want to spoil the comparison by switching out lights and adding extraction). Also, pistils are brown because I just sprayed for onset of powder mildew (I use Green Cure) - the onset is systemic to the plant, but my total lack of proper air extraction and movement is what led to the appearance at this stage.

Anyway, note the fluffy popcorn buds - CFLs. I can't wait to switch lights.

Okay, so I bought a cheap microscope; works just fine, but I really don't know what I'm looking for. Allow me to clarify: I know that trichome coloration can range between clear, milky and amber, and I have heard about what the difference between harvesting clear versus milky versus amber is - but when I'm looking at ten or fifteen little trichomes on a sugar leaf, bouncing all around in my viewfinder, how the hell can I tell what percentage of the plant's total trichomes are actually clear, milky or amber?

Anyway, I cheated a little more too; I purchased some GH FloraKleen (Klear...sp?), and did a full flush on my girl. What that entailed was following the teaspoon per gallon ratios on the FloraK bottle (I used 3 gallons, the same as one of my reservoir waterlines, and I actually poured (gently) a handful of plastic juice pitchers worth of the FloraK and pH'd water solution through my clay balls and 4" rockwool cube into an empty res bucket.

After that I prepared a new res (I have a lot of buckets :-)) with the recommended ripening measurements taken from GH's nutrient calculator on their website. I will run this for one week, and probably harvest. Also, because of my poor penetration (hehe - like the acrobatic light hanging just to force some piddly rays into the heart of the jungle below?), I am going to attempt a 2nd round of flowering after I harvest the top colas - this means I'll step up nutrients over two weeks, then go one more week of flower to see if any results, and if none, I will cut her and add the popcorn fuzz to my butter makins' jar.

Pics...

She's 3 feet tall today, in her 6th week of flower. I am currently using the GH nutrient calculator for the ripen stage, which drops her to zero Grow, a touch of Micro and a full boost of Bloom. GH recommends no KoolBloom at this stage. Next week I'll switch to a FloraKleer (sorry gang, I really should look this stuff up to spell it right) and water only reservoir for one more week, then harvest.

I'm not so ashamed of this grow after all - she's got a little frost to be pleased with. Keep in mind this was the total newb grow, with zero proper ventilation or extraction; and yes, she does get stinky on a warm day :-)

Not exactly impressive, but she smells on the fruity pebbles side, and the buds that I did get are compact. I also have a small paper bag worth of sweet leaf and young bud that I'll cure and throw in a butter makin's jar.

Progress on the 2nd grow set up is coming along just fine. I'll post here and there so we can study the difference between good lights and proper ventilation and a stuffy closet with cfls.

Thanks for looking.

Are you going to be using a clone of this plant for the second grow. Otherwise it won't be much of a comparison. :/

No; this plant is an unhealthy specimen for cloning. Considering that there are far too many x-factors beyond plant genetics to consider this a scientific method, I accept your question as valid, and clarify that the thickness of the bud and the yield produced with twice as much light penetration and the quickness of the grow given continually refreshed air, the comparison should be enough to show other newbs like me why people become serious about their grow space and the equipment they put in it.

Thank you for the thought.

haha wanna talk about newbie mistakes? I think I made them all throughout my first grow. Let's start from the beginning... I sprouted my seeds and didn't plant them properly. Half my seeds forced themselves out of the rooting cubes. I improperly installed my shop light fluorescent and shorted it out in 2 weeks. I was constructing my first ebb and flow table and removed the pump fittings from the table but forgot to turn off my automatic timer...10 gallons of water on the floor. My first grow was also first hydroponic and didn't start feeding until they were moments away from death. Went into flower with a cheap ebay ballast and it lasted all of 5 hours before overheating and melting the cord. How's that for trying to save a couple bucks? 200 down the drain. and finally, tried to tie down my freebie sativa in a table full of indicas and accidentally snapped the stem. so much for that cola! :(

Here's to hoping your second grow goes as well as mine is lol

Secret Jardin DRII 120 Pro (4'x4'x6.5')
400w MH/HPS with switchable digi ballast in a 6" cooltube
6" Can Fan and rate matched Can Fan Filter (Can Fan pkg 50) - 392 cfm, but more like high 200s with all resistance
Nothing but passive intake
I used duct sock (insulated ducting) to help prevent heat creep in ambient temps
I am a tried and true DWC guy - no recirc, no shared res - all independent
I have a combination of DIY bubble cloners and self bastardized General Hydro halo irrigation units; all in 5gal buckets
I use a commercial 6 outlet air pump (don't have numbers on me, but my buckets boil with just a single 4" air disc)
I use the simple three part General Hydro Flora series

I must confess, I started this about a week ago and truly 'effed up because...well because I was heavily medicated and really wanted to get plants in the tent. I ended up searching all over for a handful of clones one evening (pressed for time) and wound up with soil girls. I ripped 'em all outta' their beautiful soil and plugged 'em straight into bucket lids filled with clay balls - very bad idea.

The poor clones went through what I believe was extreme PH swing root-lock, and then I let them sit for three days in way too much water (I told you I was stoned! Yes, for days - you do that too, I know you do). Anyway, I just carefully treated the girls to a retreat in one of my DIY bubble cloners with a perfectly PH'd, light nute soup (the only time they'll share the same res), and they are definitely loving the new treatment - new root growth over night, and the leaves are all perky compared to the dead-soldier pose they had a few days back.

Okay, okay...a few pics of what's what (I know!!! I have a shit ton of room and only four little clones - I'm just a newb with a little dough, and I have no daydreams of pulling pounds out of this tent, just enough for me - so for now, these girls are princesses in a massive castle).

I forgot, you all like to know what's actually growing - 2 pineapple express, 1 purple diesel, 1 headband kush

Purple Diesel, eh? Might have to trade some cuttings at some point ;)

Looks good! and even though you have all that space, your girls will thrive in there. I have 8 shoved into a small space, and the best part of the plants when they're done is the upper canopy. You'll benefit from that space and they'll fill out nicely.

IMG_0997.jpgIMG_0986.jpgIMG_0981.jpgSo three of the girls are taking strong hold (the two pineapple express and one purple diesel), but the headband kush is one unhealthy looking wench. I believe her roots were the weakest when I yanked them from the bubble cloner, so I'm chalking it up to my fault, as usual. I'm not giving up on her, but if anyone else out there is growing hydro headband successfully, I'd appreciate a rundown on your stats (ph, nute levels at different stages, etc...).

A few picks from the continued grow...
