hi so i ask for some help..please....I am starting my first grow , rdwc with one plant, which i suppose i could do 2 possibly with my light choice..... I'm so new to all of this. whats the benefits of having the extra bucket that it recirculates to and how often would i have to change out the entire system. it just seems like alot of waste if i gotta change out now 2 containers of water/nutrients every 7 days. i have 2X4 tent and gonna use a timber grow lights 2vl . and most likely fox farms nutrients. Am i already doomed before this begins? i have quality seeds so i am good there. I've been doing a ton of research but it just leaves me with more questions and harder to make any decisions on how to do this. any help would be so appreciated and put to use.

Thanks

MJ, welcome.
Let me start by saying that I am new to this myself and only have one previous grow, it didn't fail but, I wouldn't call it a success either.
I have a couple questions of my own:
If you are only growing one plant, why use a recirculation system? One plant, one bucket less waste, more control.
How do you grow in something soooooo small? 2x4x? I just can't wrap my mind around it.
Now for your question, I cannot see the benefit of a secondary bucket. I have 4 girls in DWC(no re-circ) using GH's drain to waste schedule with only minor nute burn, and they are doing great in my book. They are in 5 gallon totes with 2 gallons of solution to start each week, and I top off with ph'd rainwater until the next feeding. If they look like the burn is getting worse I switch them to straight rainwater. A re-circulation system, to me, seems extravagant unless you have a fairly large grow. Also, I cannot see why you would be doomed. People been growing in boxes for years why shouldn't you be able to, I don't understand how. Worst case scenario, as I see it, you try, you fail, they die, you learn, you adapt, you try again...who knows? Good luck -Joheim

I think that a 2x2 is a perfect area for a single bucket grows, so a pair in your tent would be perfect.
I'm biased to using totes rather than buckets simply because of the increased volume. I started my hydro journey using an 8-bucket RDWC w/a 15 gal rez. Absolute cluster fluck trying to keep that thing from leaking/overflowing so I've evolved into a 4 tote UC system that has been flawless.

I agree with Johiem, simple is better with hydro.

HI,
thanks for the reply , i am now planning on two plants, and from what i understand i want to recirculate because more volume is better, for multiple reasons. i have an entire room 15x16 devoted to growing but with such a small light and small grow to begin with using a tent would be more efficient because of my light size and walls being so close and reflective... if that makes sense.

im learning more with every post read and video watched.

thanks

i have a 27 gal tote for reservoir and 2 5 gal. buckets . i think it will work great, but its my first grow so we will see...lol ill post some pictires when my tent arrives and i get a rough setup. what is uc system?

thanks so much for the replys...

Think of flowing stream-17 gal totes connected with 2" bulkhead fitting in series. It just pumps from one end of the string to the first. Simple waterfall action eliminates air-pumps/stones. I added a chiller this year after a couple of seasons running with just bennies in the rez.
