Smell problems. Stinky needs to go. Please help friends

I have a 4 x 4 x 5.5' tall box built completely solid with no light or air leaks. I'm a carpenter so I know this box is very well built.

I have had these 2 great, stinky females in veg for about 1 and a half months. I added 18 Lemon Haze seedlings (about a month old now)which are in 2.6 gallon pots (originally party cups) and the entire ground is covered now. The seeds were not femenized so I'm hopeing on at least 9 females out of the 18 starts. Back to my question: When I have been opening the door, any time I do, there has been a rush of stinky air and I have not smelled the air coming from the exaust before. It's only been when I open the door that any smell is noticed. All of the sudden, starting 2 days ago, I got a strong smell of fresh green herb coming from the filter. When I bought the Carbon filter it was a set of the filter and a nice, powerful 4" inline centrifuge fan for exaust, basically a scrubber set up.

The Questions:

1.) Do the filters stop working after a month or so and need to be replaced or is the filter that I have just a poorly made filter that just sucks?

2.) What Carbon filter is the best one to go with?

3.) Do the carbon filters, even the real good ones, take out most all the smell?

4.) What is the best line to run for the exaust and inlet? (I am using 4" aluminum stretch hose for something you would use for a clothes dryer). I wonder if the best is the insulated so that it cant be easily breached or poked, maybe it will last longer and be more effective?

5.) I have to get this smell under control. I am moveing to a new place this week and cant have my room smelling so strong. A light smell is ok but not a fresh, strong smell. Please help. Any input or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Shoot, I know how to roll a J. It was calling me a stranger a bit ago and I know my laptop well, I practically sleep with it......hmmm, that gives me a new idea for a new app and device, lol.

What are the CMH/CFM ratings of the fan and filter?

In my experience alot of kits you buy generally have a cheap filter that isn't rated high enough for the fan.

For example my filter is capable of running 600CMH and my fan is pulling 460CMH. this way my filter is not running beyond its capable limit and I get zero smell.

Hope this makes sense.

The filter should last longer than that unless its underszed for the fan. Even then you may still be able to use the filter as is.

What filter and what fan?

I'm thinking if you slow down the fan speed, the absorption time will increase and the smell will go away. Hopefully you can run tlyiur fan slower while maintaining proper circulation temp. If you can't turn down the exhaust fan, you may need a biggr filter. Or u could possibly not hav it hooked up right. Make sure you go filter, fan. Nothing in between. The tubing, cooltube, whatever, goes after that. I use dryer tubing

OP,
Your CF shouldn't stop working after a month. It should be good for 1-2yrs.

Things to consider when looking for a CF:
- The diameter of the CF, the larger the diameter the more surface area for filtering.
- The bed depth, a thicker bed will provide more filtering
- The weight of the filter, more weight usually means that it has more carbon.

I use a canfan 33 filter and consider it a quality filter. I completely agree with the underdriving advice mentioned above. I matched my fan to the filter rating and haven’t experienced any smell problems.
