simple lighting question

O.K. guys take it easy on me because although my desire and ability to learn is on target my acquired skills thus far is close to none so I am hanging around here exited about learning and then eventually sharing knowledge as well.

Here is my question I understand that a plant in it's vegetative state requires about 18 hours of light a day "correct me if I am wrong"

So in order to obtain to the needed hours of light is it OK to use both a CFL bulb and natural sunlight as well?

It is definately okay to use CFL's along with sunlight. Although a greenhouse might be better than just walking it around due to the plant possibly being stressed by it but using CFL's with sun is fine. And it doesn't really require 18/6 or greater I have heard of people growing 12/12 from seed although I use 24/0 through veg

You can use mixed light sources (natural and artificial combined).

In fact the highest quality green houses have HPS lighting in addition to the sunlight that penetrates the walls/roof.

Thanks a bunch for the info.

Is it true that HPS lights consume a whole lot of electricity?

Just get a 150 watt HPS if electrical costs are a concern.. Maybe add some CFL's as side lighting.. People say 150 watt HPS is waste but has worked great for me so far :D This is my first grow and its coming along alright imo ^^
