Should Welfare Recipients be Forced to Perform Community Service?

I believe the gubment could pay for the certificates, saves a ton of tax payer money down the road!
This must be why you're running the government rather than posting anonymously in a pot forum. keep your day job. Asking people if they want fries is an honorable profession.

Dude, did you even read your own link?
It's a program that assists and prepares welfare recipients to work, not a program that requires them to perform community service.
No, they have to go out and do work. Some days they dig fire pits at the coast, others they tie down vines in the vineyards. They must do atleast three days per week or they get kicked off the program. Why do people that know nothing about a program criticize it? Go down to your county welfare office and you will see them being picked up in a van to go and work every day.

Several of the ladies I did mock interviews with cleaned the homes of the disabled and elderly. In fact, one of them was a volunteer that helped with our hospice care while my mom was ill. She did mom's laundry and cleaned her area and the rooms adjacent to the sick room. She was definitely a god-send. She's working full time now and taking classes at the college.

I think welfare should have a time limit but we should include a four year(required) college degree if not working. It should be a 5 year plan for a single mother 1 year to get your shit together and get a GED if needed and then 4 years of college which you should have time while your children are in school or daycare. No grade restrictions as long as your passing......yeah I know I am crazy I think we should teach a man to fish instead of throwing fish at them.

So, all a woman has to do is get pregnant from a deadbeat dad and BINGO!! Free healthcare, childcare and college for 4 or more years???

Seriously?

If you want to have more of an action, reward it...

Or be cut off if they refuse?

There are many jobs that be can done that local governments cannot afford. Work like cleaning streets, removing unsightly graffiti to voluntary employment tutoring schoolchildren. Of course, single parents/caregivers for someone with a disability should not be made to work, only able bodied people would be made to work.

Handouts have proven not to work and send the wrong message. There is plenty of community service that can be done and this would give the person receiving public assistance some worth and work experience!
This reminded me of:

Well it happens now and its an 18 year term at minimum. Yes if we're going to spend our resources lets educate people because that's truly is the problem with our society. By not doing this we're creating a continued cycle as evidence has shown, it's time to really figure out the issue anything else is blowing smoke.

What has gone wrong with a society where the needy don't demand they be allowed to work for the assistance? What has happened to self esteem?

I was on food stamps once. I was very hungry, and homeless, and completely broke. My most valuable possession was my frame backpack and a heavy leather fringed coat I designed.

My chick magnet, in a previous bygone, day, in which had I slept, the night before.

I showed up after an arduous hitch hike down from the beaches around Scripps. Showed up exactly where, took a lot of walking and another night outside. I finally found a homeless shelter. And it was the pits, I could smell. I told the first person, I could find I wanted to sign up for work. Something I remembered I read about stuff from the Great Depression and I was 22 years old. It was 1974.

Oh! Well, that is different. I had NO Idea. I was given a basic, but very clean and quiet hotel room downtown for as long as I wanted and my first real meal in days. I showed up early the next morning and got along famously with the dock boss, was given a spike stick to pick up trash. I wander the old dock areas all summer 4 hrs then vouchers for food and essentials and got my life. I didn't make any friends and I was sorta on the run from me and what it all became.

I did not go out. I looked for and found my SELF. And after a rough Che Guevara/LSD fascination and goofing around with the SDS, it was seeming real again.

Believe it, if I could get a life, anyone can. You have not heard any of it, really. I only related the turn. It is there for all.

The turn when you want.

Dude, why do you choose to ignore something you know is true?
Are your progressive ideals that strong that you refuse to look at the truth?
dude.. how many times are you going to say dude in this thread?

Pulling a random baseless accusation out of your fetid asshole is not truth. It's just you modifying and promoting the welfare queen narrative.

Yes, me a BYU graduate and devout Mormon. A liberal leftie. How's that alternative reality working for you?

Clinton passed Workfare along with a Republican Congress. The welfare roles magically diminished along with poverty.

I dont want the government creating make work jobs for people. Right now when you are on welfare, getting a job is really avoided as you have free healthcare, food, rent assistance, etc. One of the major problems is that government does not allow a person some sort of transition into work, it simply cuts them off. So, welfare is not a safety net right now it is a trap.

There are alot of things that could be done but we also need to cut taxes on businesses and cut regulation as was done by both parties in the administrations of Kennedy, Regan & Bush I. That will actually increase government revenue, decrease public assistance and make the economy much healthier.

"Moreover, participants who find a job and are no longer eligible for welfare may continue to receive help with medical care and child care expenses."
seems to dispute that...

Why wouldnt you assume that someone on welfare dosnt already have a full time job? or possibly multiple job's already?

If i had multiple jobs and was already working 40+ hours a week. would you expect me to preform community service on top of that?
What if i was working multiple jobs, AND going to college?
But i also had a kid, and could really benifit from food stamps?
and i really needed the help, because since im already working multiple jobs, and/or going to college, i needed to pay an arm and a leg for daycare for my kid/s.

Does that make any sense to you?
Don't have kids if you can't afford them maybe?

Why do you always have to call people names, you do that to people you don't know in person?

aww.. did I hurt your little feelers... and.. what name did I call you exactly?
Nah, no feeling hurt here. I was just wondering if this name calling habit of yours is practiced in front of people in person or if you only do it behind a computer scree?
