Setting up new grow... your thoughts and advice.

Wanting to do a 1 plant grow (maybe two...but doubt I'll have enough wattage with what Im going form what do you think...see below). Going to be growing in soil. Will use bagseed for the first couple grows so I can get the hang of it.

These are the things Im looking at buying:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/400W-COOLTUBE-INSIDE-FULL-KIT-TENT-YOYO-NUTRIENT-/320728477122?pt=AU_Seed_Starting_Hydroponics&hash=item4aace82dc2
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320578560668&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_3070wt_908
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Carbon-Filter-150mm-x-500mm-Phat-Filter-/220821297013?pt=AU_Seed_Starting_Hydroponics&hash=item3369f99775#ht_2582wt_905

Do those seem adequate?

Is there anything else Im going to need? I cant think of anything else right now besides small things such as ducting, electronic temp and humidity guage and maybe ph tester.

The nutrients that come with the tent and light set up are hydro nutes right? So I cant use them with a soil grow.

Any thoughts and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

for only 1 plant??? what are you doing going for a tree? that tent will be roomy for 4 plants & depending on growing style, you could fit 9

well yea hopefully... grew outdoors from this batch of bagseed last year an got a good 6ft plant. assuming it wont be quite as big with the 400w hps but am hoping to get at least half as good, hence maybe 2 plants...

looks great for a first set up! I would put three plants in there. you can use those nutrients too just check their npk but ive used hydro nutrients like cutting edge plenty of times in soil. good luck and do a journal!!

thanks cacamal. I will definitely think about doing a grow journal. Even if only to get advice and guidance through any problems I might face along the way. Hopefully I'll be okay, but I know growing indoors is going to be much different and there may be a bit of a learning curve. And I'll definitely do a lil research about using hydro nutes in soil now considering your advice.
Thanks again for the encouragement.

BTW, is Canna Terra Pro decent potting mix to be using? It sounds good from what I gather. Not as cheap as some but most likely better. Anyone here used it or know anyone who has?

I have canna coco which is similar and it is AMAZING soil, so yes the terra pro version is great!

I have a similar grow with a 400W, i fit 7 plants in 5 gallon pots in there with a 150mm x 600mm carbon filter (more than enough), with a 200cfm fan for filter as well as 1 small 50W intake (100mm) and a 150mm (50W) to cool my light ... which isnt really needed haha

I got 300g harvest which is a bloody good turn out if you ask me!! .5g per watt is expected for a average grow (plants are ALWAYS yellow) and pro indoor growers can get up to 1g per W.

I think what you have is really good for first indoor grow. The nutrients in that pack are AWESOME (i really like to use dutch master gold series). for my first grow - same set up as i said before i used only the grow A&B and got a 200g outcome :))) I didnt PH at all (just looked for symptoms).

Oh for the nutrients. The list that tell you the amount for each watering. I used 5ml per 4L of water for a few weeks then up't it to 10ml then after 7 week veg bumped it to 22ml (that is 22ml of A and 20ml of B). You can mix it into your resoir, or like me just mix it in your watering can which put me at ease to over/under feeding them.
Dutch master has a feeding calender if you still feel uneasy about measurements:
http://www.dutchmaster.com.au/nutrient_calculator.php?language=english

If i can help anymore just ask - because i had pretty much the same set-up as that. If you want to know what methods i used or equipment just ask too :) Hope i helped!

Oh and that fan can be very loud. I have the same size tent and its cool like hell so you can get a smaller 200cfm if you want.

Thanks djj, twas helpful indeed.

I think I will go with the Canna Terra Pro.

I ended up going with a smaller tent (.9 x .5 x 1.6m)...I can always upgrade later if I need but I think it'll do for now for what Im aiming at.

Well done on the 300g mate...thats roughly 42g per plant. If I can get 30g per plant (90-120g total) Ill be stoked! btw...did you do a grow journal? If you did I wouldnt mind checkin it out.

oh and re the fan and ventilation:
this is the only area where Im still a bit iffy about. I cant seem to get my head around it. Im not too worried about the noise factor. Its not a stealth grow so noise isnt an issue at all.
Anyways, I was thinking of just having a passive intake and having some ducting from the light to the fan to the carbon filter. ie. ducting from cooltube going out exhaust hole near top of tent down to fan and carbon filter. Is this going to work or am I going to have to rethink the whole ventilation thing? I dunno...

cheers

or should I go the other way around. ie, Carbon Filter -> Fan -> Cooltube -> duct out of tent. still with a passive intake. Hmm I dont know.

You'll want to go: Carbon Filter -> Fan -> duct (only if you can't fit filter onto cooltube)-> cooltube -> duct-out
Yeah and depending on what fans you use, you want slightly negative pressure so air doesn't push at the walls and let non-filtered air out. Not so much that you walls come in heaps, just a little (your plants will push the walls back in a tent).

Yeah, some method of estimating your harvest is:
Average grower (leaves stay green most of the time) .5g/per Watt
But experienced indoor growers can get 1g/watt

Those estimates are of course really rough and the main factors are the lumen's (its actually the PAR watts that affect it, anyhow..) per square foot (or meter), the nutrients you use, soil quality, ph etc all those

That 6inch booster fan you linked WILL NOT work attached to a filter , they are designed to be used as intakes.

You will need a good quality centrifugal fan.

Ya, ended up changing what I posted above. Got a proper fan. Also went a smaller tent. Tis all coming together nicely it seems.
thanks mate

More is better bro...
First of all, nothing can really compare to outdoors growth as nothing can mimic the intensity of our sun. BUT there are a lot of factors that go into that kind of thing.
Second, .5/Watt? wtf are you smoking? lol cuz i want that shit... So what you're saying is i should see 500G off one plant in my 1000w room!? A VERY ROUGH ESTIMATE INDEED
Third, 400W will be good for you but as stated before you should most def go with at least 1 if not 6 more plants in that room as it is more than big enough

Of course nothing can compare to outside, but unfortunately I dont have anywhere to grow outdoors without a high chance of being busted.

Also, like I said, I went with a smaller tent as I realized it was severe overkill...even with the smaller tent Im now going to go 4 plants (will sprout 6 and keep the hopefully 4 females or if more fems will use the best 4).

And Ive now seen quite a few people say you can expect .5g/watt for an average grower...so I dont really know what to believe. Some have even said 1g/watt for an experienced grower. And I dont think he means 500g off 1 plant under 1000w. I think its just assumed that if you have a 1000w you are going to have more than one plant...thats the way i took it anyways.

Thanks for your input...

yup yup, cheers buddy and I know that he wasn't meaning that I was exaggerating a bit myself... But you should sit pretty with 4 in there dude... lemme know how it goes! Be sure to post ur stuff in the growing journal section of the site! To each his own for sure, good luck tho! I'm looking forward to my next to cycles of plants to come thru as the ones in there right now were clones :/ the next 40 are all seed :-)
