Setting up first grow... I need some guidance

So far, I've got 2 23w (100w) CFL's for seedlings, some miracle gro seed starting mix, (10) 4" pots and a 430 watt hps light.

I plan on getting some seeds from Nirvana. I'm not sure which strain. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something with high potency, high yield with medium to less smell. I want to do some skunk really bad but I know it would just be ridiculous.

I'm in the process of setting up a cabinet (4' x 4' x 7'). Do you think the 2 CFL's will be enough for the seedlings until I put them under the hps. I really just want to get them started with something else so they don't stretch too much, then switch them to hps after they've established themselves.

I don't plan on growing gigantic plants. Maybe about 1.5' to 2' tall before flowering. I figure once I pull the males, I will have plenty of room. Eventually, I plan on putting a 6" inline exhaust fan in, as well as some mylar and a fan.

I haven't started growing yet, I'm kinda just gathering supplies right now. Any suggestions? What nirvana strain should I get? Are there any good inexpensive soils I can use? I really don't have enough money to fill 5 gal pots with fox farm. I went to the hydro store today and everything is ridiculously expensive. But, since I plan on getting quality genetics, I'd at least like to get some decent soil.

Thanks for the help. I've been reading up for a while but everyone's setup seems to differ, so I figured I'd ask for some advice.

Well you have obviously done some research. Good on ya dude.

Your plan sounds good. i wish i could help you on the strains but I don't know mine too well. i HAVE ALWAYS GROW UNKNOWNS. opps! :?

Don't cheap out on the soil. it is a very important factor in determining how these are going to grow. You can buy some 'promix' which is grow medium with no nutrients added. I usually switch to that when I transplant for flowering.

I heard that white widow has a high potency. I'd stay away from the skunk. I think I have a couple of them and they reek.

Make sure you transplant at the right times into bigger pots. You'll be able to tell when they get root bound.

The two cfl's are great for seedlings. I wish I had a bigger MH light but so far my main source is cfl's.

I always grow mine at least 2 feet before I start to flower them. Thats not really gigantic though.

welcome to the rollitup family obstacle. like everything Lacy said, im glad u did ur research. its nice to be able to help someone who has a clue. anywhoo. right now i have dutch passion blueberry and strawberry cough going. both are very good varieties. i would personally go with dutch passion or greenhouse. maybe thseeds. those are the three companys i like. and anything by DJ Short. anyways def get some decent soil. you have enough lighting, and you seem like your wanting to make the ventilation system and everything work, why skimp on soil? thats what your girls live in!

dont skimp on the dirt.
i have to give it to you folks for vegging to 2dt before flowering with cfls.....too much work for me. but you seem to have your head in the right direction. if you cant afford mylar yet then use flat white spay paint.
and maybe you should consider a smaller veg chamber to keep a couple rooted clonese topped back in so you can use the bushy midget for a mother when those 2 are done to save seeds and help guarantee females in the future.
if your growing on the dl you may wanna consider building a new box for an existing speaker etc.....for the second veg chamber.

personlay id try and find a MH lamp instead of HPs for veging you'll get busher and noder plants then swithc to HPS for flowering you wont regret it in the long run, ak-47 is a good strain or even trainwreck best of luck during your grow keep us updated

that is correct PKNL but hps will work just fine for vegging. its just not optimum. but any hps will be better for vegging than cfls IMO.

Thanks for all of the responses! I think I'll be fine with the 430 watt hps. It's a hortilux bulb and as I can recall, it does have some of the spectrum close to a metal halide bulb included.

The white spray paint thing is a good idea. I'll probably go with that to save $20.

I'm still looking around for seeds. I'll probably order them on Monday. AK-47 would be delicious. I've personally been thinking about some sort of Kush or maybe a Mandala strain.

Question: Is it okay to transplant from 4" pots to 5 gallon pots?
