self ballested mercury vaper light/lamp

dont know if this is in the right thred??
what i want to know is if i can use these to grow with just want them for veg stage, i have had a dozen or so given me so thought i would try, if any one has used these please let me know.
i have done some googleing and people have used them to good effect.

Don't waste your time with mercury vapor bulbs. They don't have the proper light spectrum for vegging or flowering.

thanks for that.
what about adding a couple for side lighting??? just i got them for free and thought better to use than waste, i have read that they are 3100k so thats just a bit higher than the flowering type bulbs

They'll work if you use enough of them, but they are very inefficient. Prepare to use double what you would use with HPS or MH, to get similar results.(like 800 watts for a 4' x 4' area)

thanks guys, might as well chuck em in the bin by the sounds of it, cos if i have to use double thats not saveing electricity.
