Hello,
I could use some advise. I have two small plants that I put in dirt one week ago today. They both still have the seed casing on them. Under a loop ( microscope ) I can see that they alive, small hairs and greenish. The seed casing is cracking but VERY slowly. When I water them I spray the casing hoping to soften it. The casing is firmly attached, I tried to move it with a tooth pick! They are under CFL 6500k 23 watts (100 watts reg ). The lite is 6 - 7 inches off the plants!
Is there anything else I could do to get the casing off?

If you have a used eye drop bottle or something similar, drop some water on the seed case and repeat till it comes away.

g'day mate, i to have had a lot of probs with casings staying attached to seedlings.I'm also a newbie and have a lot to learn, but have found that first thing in morn, before any moisture gets on your babies, get a small dropper and place single drop on casing, try to get droplet to sit there, most of time it will, repeat throughout the day, by evening gently ease casing back and forth GENTLY, a lot of people much more clever than me will say don't ever force the issue and leave it alone, they are probably right. Just saying whats worked for me. Remember gently. Good luck, bob.

How steady are your hands?

I had to do 20 or more like that when I planted 76 seeds to do the SoG thing that's part of my grow finishing up soon. I just used a dental pick on one side and held the other side with the tip of my little pocket knife. Pried them apart like a clam. Didn't hurt a one. Never seen so many stay on like that before. I was spritzing them with the water bottle for a few days and that didn't seem to work.

As long as you don't rip the head off they can take some damage and be fine.

Good luck.

Forgot to mention that if there's a skin holding the leaves together just put one finger behind the head and use the tip of a small knife to slit it and then the leaves should spread open and stand up by the next day.

Those 23W CFLs works best at about 1 inch or so away
This seedling is 8 days old (ignore the LED bulb in the front, I just put it in an open socket...)

hey guys, not even sure if i'm in right place or not, anyway wondering if anyone can advise me on problem with ww and girl scout cookies seedlings. Germed in water 24hrs,most seemed to open up so put into jiffy pots. White widows sprouted within 24hrs,no sign of cookies or siberian haze after 2 days. Know it can take a while. All seeds from seedsman, trouble is i might have damped them a bit,is there any way back from this. Ph is 6.2-6.8,kept them under plastic wrap until saw them break through, stems are a bit wonkey and purple, leaves are uneven but don't look to bad. Any advice from my most learned brothers is truely welcome. bob the sponge. Alvmost forgot they are all auto's. Been giving them more attention than shapell corby but am definite newbie

Were the ones that didn't come up yet split open when you planted them?

I put my seeds into a pill jar lined with 150 grit sandpaper and shake them around for at least a full minute to scarify the seed's surface then plant directly to moist ProMix that I've run through a 1mm mesh screen. As soon as they have come up I water with some dilute nutes. Don't need to feed right away if you are using soil that has nutes in it but ProMix doesn't so they need a little something to eat pretty soon after coming up.

Handling seeds with bare hands can coat them with skin oils and make it hard for them to absorb moisture so they can take a lot longer to sprout or not sprout at all. I used to soak in water with a little peroxide in it as the peroxide helps remove any coating on the seeds but have better luck with planting directly to the mix.

g'day friend, thanks for help, yes most were split with small feet but there were couple sitting bottom of glass just chilling. Maybe they are the problem beans. Used tweezers so no contamination.how many days before you give up on them?

I'd give them a few more days at least. If nothing happens you can carefully expose them and if they still haven't cracked let them dry for a couple days and then rough them up a bit with the sandpaper or even a nail file. Just lightly scratch up the surface and if a file run it along the seam on the seed where it would split open. If it doesn't sprout after that then it likely was dead inside.

I use tweezers too but found they would easily pop out of the steel jaws and shoot all over the room. I put a couple of small pieces of heat-shrink tubing on the jaws and they grip real nice now.

Good luck!
