Seed Storage For The Extremist?

For some time now I have been looking into different ways to store seeds.
Lately I have gone to "lab vials" with the foam lined plastic caps. These
are great I think for "average" storage needs. They are fairly cheap and
readily available. They also come in many sizes and several colors.. I have
seen clear, amber, blue, and green versions. For example:

http://www.containerandpackaging.com/item/G108
or
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-AMBER-GLASS-VIALS-20X70-mm-4-DRAM-WITH-SCREW-CAP-/170647635349?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27bb644595

With most fruit/vegetable seeds incredibly long storage times can be achieved.
Are Cannabis seeds that much different? As far as I know, seeds are seeds. If
anyone can dispute this.. please do. The chart below shows "typical" garden
seed storage times as effected by temperature, so how would Cannabis seeds
compare?

"STANDARD" SEED STORAGE TIMES (For PROPERLY stored seeds)

80 Degrees: 1 Year
75 Degrees (Room Temp): 2-3 Years
60 Degrees: 6-10 Years
50 Degrees: 10-12 Years
40 Degrees: 20-25 Years
32 Degrees: 50 Years (or more)

The best bet for LONG-term seed storage imho, is to use "O2/H2O barrier bags".
These are opaque mylar bags. The tamper-proof ziplock bags are my favorite.
You fill them from the bottom and then heat-seal them. There are also several
options available for dessicants & oxygen absorbers that would be needed for
EXTREME storage.

A great resource I have found for these items:

Then all you need is a small refrigerator, like a "dorm" unit, or better yet,
a higher-quality "bar" style mini. At least one with a good temp control.
With this type of packaging humidity isn't really an issue. Also, you may
"can" many packets for additional protection and bulk long-term storage.
Home canning equipment can be fairly affordable.

Who knows how long they could last!?

BTW.. I just started messing around with this recently... so how are mine doing? No clue,
get back to me in 5-10 years and I'll let you know!

Comments and brainstorms are strongly encouraged.. and THANKS FOR READING!

i keep mine in vials with some silica like this...

an air tight container kept in a dry, cool place will work for many years. i recently popped some beans that i bought a little over 2 years ago and they germ'd in less than 24 hours.

i would like to keep them in a refrigerator though, need to find a mini-fridge that will fit my tackle box-o-beans.

As long as they are not damaged in any way i think they may last forever
If only the effects did
Just the thought of that! :-)

cmt1984... that is a magnificent collection! Inspirational even... and that is what I'm talkin' about!
A very successful storage method... so in a controlled cold environment they should last for many
years and remain consistently viable. I can't wait to pop a foil pack in 20 years and see how it goes.

just pop lid cureing jars and silica does the trick, i have seeds going back 8 years that still germ. I recently tried some 2006-7 Mrnice G13skunk with good germ and vigor

Think you will ever get them all done??????
A reason I give up when i got to 130+ strains (how can I grow all these)

I've seen seeds pop with greater than 50% germ rate after ten years of storage.
They'll hold up, *IF* you keep them cool and dry.

of course we won't grow them all... cmt, myself and a few other seed collectors around here have problems, what can we say?? lol... i try to look at it like preserving history.. and what if the laws change and big pharma co's get involved in the marijuana seed business like they have with veggy seeds and other gmo stuff??
then the seeds that me and my fellow collectors have held onto would be priceless.. :)

lol, when i first heard this theory, i kind of laughed to myself, but the more i think about, ti's really not that far fetched, so i do my part to make sure if and when it does, there will still be plenty of gear from yesteryear around.. :)

not only that, but look at how many strains are no longer available for w/e reason, breeder got busted, parent stock died, etc etc.. people like us make sure they're not lost forever and ever.. :)

mmhmm, i see, i see.

i have decided that in the world of seed collec... err preservation, you sir, are an enabler.

and i thank you for it :p

in seriousness though, i think you're 100% correct on money. certain strains do disappear, and if you snooze, you truly do lose. thats usually also why i don't grab strains that i honestly want to try like G13s PineappleExpress. it will always be there, always. but what GGG or Bodhi are dropping will not. and a 100 other similar scenarios ;)

thanks, i try to enable all i can, lol..
but you never even know when some very popular strains might go awol... not that they would be hard to find from someone else, but they could always stop being made..
i know a this guy i worked with went to the dam and came home and wouldn't shut up about martian mean green. best bud he had ever smoked, blah blah blah.. well, i wanted it, but didn't get when i saw it around as i wanted other harder to find strains first as i thought the mmg would always be around, after all, we're talking about dna here..
well, lo and behold, after a few months i decided i wanted to get it finally.. well fuck me if they didn't stop making it for like two or so years, and i had a super hard time getting me hands on a pack.. i think one of the parents died.. they have recently just re-released it, but only in fems and yo'd have a super hard time trying to find the reg's like i got..

Ye I know what you meen RB as i try and steer away from anything I believe to be GMO. Lucky in EU its labled.
Their is said to be some companies useing the terminator gene, (its said to be a strong gene that can get into any strain???)
I believe it to as it is so fast a company gets ripped of buy someone doing f2s. (thats how it is)

Just we seen tomuch greed happen in the last 100 years its gone out of control
Something is going to happen soon as we have the artic stores, We have UN debates weekly even in UK we have been having parliment enquiries into the failed war on drugs. Sativex as just been given a double sized license to grow double and sell their patent buy the bent corporate UK gov.

I ad an apoligy from BBC while ago as they went on TV and said sativex is treated and dont get you high or stoned. it Absoloutly does.

So yer i know what your saying with future preservations as thats what i say when i still browse n my card itches.....

After toking strains like C99, TGA subs strains why would anyone want to try BARNIES Pineapple. ITS WANK

and yah, i always lol when i see people sucking up to the likes of greenhouse seed co or even barney's as they're pretty much the bottom of the barrel in the seed game, the walmart of the breeding world if you will...
the pump out tons of quantity, but very low on the quality side of things imo..

there are ton's of smaller breeders out there today that have the fire, and are much more concerned over selling one pack of fire then 1000 packs of shit.. and the nice thing is most of the time the smaller breeders sell their gear super cheap, or even give out testers for free if you're in the right spots.. :)
plus it's always nice to have the breeder available to ask questions and to bounce ideas off of as well.. try calling arjan at greenhouse .. not sure why you'd want to though, lol..
but check out sites like cannazon, they have tons of lesser known breeders bringing the fire, same as canna collective and even the farm, although i'd never send that tool bag logic a red cent of mine..
