Seed Storage and Containers

Quick thread for seed storage etc.

For years I have used all types of containers and added rice to keep moisture at bay. I was recently gifted something however, that I likely would not have discovered on my own and it works fantastic! Someone could market these for this pupose I suspect. There is a company making containers for diabetics test strips. They have an insert with holes in the bottem and below it are beads designed to wick moisture. I am not quite sure what they are comprised of (though I could likely discover that by asking the company or reading up on it) however, they can be poured out and replaced with rice as well. Quite the little container and worth a share I thought.

I am actually diabetic and have thousands of test strip containers - If you want containers just ask a diabetic they are likely to have plenty of them to give away

My containers ar a little different thow they have the dessicant built into the wall of the container

The dessicant in mine go bad fast thow by the time I am done with the container the dessicant is about shot (I live in a humid area with no AC). Althow they can be 'recharged' eazly by filling the container with a dessicant for a few days , dry epsom salt works great and is cheap

I would be carefull with desicants and seed storage thow , A strong dessicant can dry a seed to much and kill it

My seeds are in baggies in an old peach jar in the basement.
I just popped 4 Blueberry seeds that were almost 5 years old in a paper towel. They popped in about 20 hours.
We have low RH, but that doesn't really matter in a sealed jar.

I just keep all my seeds in the original breeder packs, or a light proof container, and then put into an envelope, and keep them in my fridge, I've had much luck with this, and earlier as I kept them in room temp with zero light, most did not pop, when I needed them too, so the fridge has definitely helped

My beans are just in spaghetti sauce jars. Lol
