when germinating seeds if the tap root doesnt pop out within a couple days of being in water does that mean its a dud? after a few days should one just go ahead and plant it anyway and hope for the best?

What do you mean by "being in water"? If you just dropped a seed in a cup of water, it will crack and sink. That is when you take it out and either plant it or try the paper towel method. Leaving the seed in water after it cracks will ruin the seed.

There ya go.I did this and planted the one seed after 48 hours that it did not show a taproot and the bitch never grew so i would say if it odnt pop in the water try the paper towel methd and if nothing in 5 days in the paper towel its a dud
some seeds sprout slow, you can leave them in the water for a while
you can nick the seed edge to help, that can be tricky to not damage the inner part which is bad
there is a point where a seed will rot, but i've gone 4 days or so, managed to get a stubborn seed to sprout

mo, yep plant them. All I do is soak 12 hours then plant in soil, easy.

I have a very high success rate with the pre soak and paper towl method . Just give them a little time.

I soak overnight or until they sink....whichever occurs first. Then onto a damp paper towel, not dripping wet but nice and moist. Cover and keep dark, like a paper towel on a plate and then a bowl over all, this provides humidity and keeps everything dark.
Keep an eye on it, don't let it dry out. As soon as you see a root pop out, get it in dirt.
So in answer to your question...yes, plant them. I have had a seed take as long as 5 days to pop. Be sure and point the tip of the tap root in the down direction in your pot, sometimes struggling to get turned around can be the undoing of a stubborn seed.

i get a moist paper towel and put the seeds in it and fold it over. then put it in a zip lock bag and seal it. then set it in ur window sill for a few days. i put mine on top of my cable box and they sprouted in 2 days..

thanks for the replies everyone. Ive always had them crack in the water then threw them into soil. This was the first time one didnt crack after soaking in water. Nothing yet so who knows. In a peat moss cube so hopefully she has the will to live.
