Sad story

DETROIT (May 16) - A 7-year-old girl was shot and killed when an officer's gun went off during a struggle with a woman in a house where Detroit police were searching for a suspect in the slaying of a teenager, a police official said.

Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee said at a news conference Sunday that Aiyana Jones was hit in the neck by a single bullet and died at a hospital.

"This is any parent's worst nightmare. It also is any police officer's worst nightmare," Godbee said.

Godbee said officers with the department's Special Response Team set off a flash grenade as they entered the home about 12:40 a.m. Sunday with a warrant to look for a suspect in the Friday slaying of a 17-year-old boy.

The lead officer encountered a 46-year-old woman immediately inside the front room of the house and "some level of physical contact" ensued during which the officer's gun went off, Godbee said. The officers had identified themselves as police, he said.

Godbee said the shooting was being investigated and all information was preliminary.

"We cannot undo what occurred this morning," he said. "All we can do is to pledge an open and full investigation and to support Aiyana's family in whatever way they may be willing to accept from us at this time."

The officers had a search warrant and were looking for a 34-year-old man suspected in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jarean Blake.

Blake, a student at Southeastern High School, was gunned down Friday by a store in front of his girlfriend. Blake stumbled across the street, collapsed and died, police said.

Officers arrested the suspect inside the home where Aiyana was shot, Godbee said.

"This is a tragedy of unspeakable magnitude to Aiyana's parents, family and all those who loved her," Godbee said. "It is a tragedy we also feel very deeply throughout the ranks of the Detroit Police Department."

Thats just fucking wrong in so many levels.
They used a flashbang to enter the house! shits ridiculous

Sad... but nothing wrong with using a flashbang to enter the house of a murderer, I'd rather disorientate the guy than have to shoot him. So not sure where you're coming from with the "shits ridiculous" line, unless you wanted them to show up with flowers and talk over a cup of coffee with the murderer.

Unfortunately, these things happen, at least they were there for a good reason... and they caught the guy they were looking for, and shame on him for putting his family in this danger, and practically getting what I'm going to guess is his little sister killed, he knew the cops were after him, he should've been a man and taken care of his business.

I usually agree with you with the arguments about cops on this site. But this story is one big fuck up on the cops part. Yes, using a flashbang is inhumane on a residential house with innocent kids walking around. What if that kid was alittle toddler, say 3 years old. That flashbang could have ruined the rest of its life. So like i said before..shits ridiculous.

I agree it's a huge fuckup, but...

They can't always know that there will be a little kid inside... and so that puts even more on the killer himself, he should've at LEAST told his family/whoever it was with the little girl that he was wanted by police for murder, which usually includes having a SWAT team enter your house.

Maybe he didn't have the relationship that allowed him to do that though... still should've never put himself around a kid, which put the kid in great danger.

Also, a flashbang is much less lethal than tear gas, or bean bags... it was the best choice as they probably didn't know what they were going to encounter inside.

"The gun went off"

If the suspect would of dropped his gun and it went off it would of read "Man shoots girl in neck"

Why would this cop even at any point have the gun pointed at a kid?

I believe it went off accidentally, even the most deranged cop I don't think would shoot a little kid, knowingly. Most of us humans have a soft spot for children.

More than likely, it was smokey from the flashbang, couple that with adrenaline of yelling, looking for your suspect... etc.

But like I said, I agree it was a fuckup, equating it with a hunter in the woods blindly shooting at a bush because it moved.

The officer, shot and killed this innocent girl, and now he's got to live with that for the rest of his life, I am more than sure he is overwhelmed with guilt.

Now comes time for responsibility.

I completely agree. A citizens' (Not civilian, that's a word that's used to detach responsibility.)
house is the last place a cop needs to be "Blindly firing" I'm sure you can agree with that.

What's your idea of responsibility? Personally I think he isn't good enough for death, and deserves a life sentence in prison.

Of course it will most likely be something like suspension with pay.

Worst case I would say fired.

What's even worse is that family has no say in the matter. As far as it goes with them he has immunity.
