rockwool?

When germing in rockwool have any of you place rockwool and all straight into the grow media? Is there pros or cons to doing this or will it cause issues like mold root rot etc. I have always removed from the rockwool but would like to not rish tearing the root system. Any suggestions would be helpful.

If you germmed a seed in r/w then do not by any means tear that rockwool open to get at that sprout. if you must do it this way get 2 pieces of rockwool and put them next to eachother with the seed in the middle, so it can easily be seperated.

Ok but is there any problems with leqving it in the rockwool and placeing that directly into my htdroton. I know that i just have to make sure its completely covered so no light gets to the r/w to create mold and ive see pictures where people have done it this way juat looking for anyone that has expierwnce doing this first hand or any pointers i should know. This isnt my first grow but will be my first time using r/w

You are correct. Keep it away from light but also dont let the water level hit the rockwool

If you get it to sprout in a small rockwool cube, plant it all in the hydroton. The rockwool cube acts as a base and the hydroton a stabilizing extension of it.

forget the rw and the hydroton, go medialess. i use foam collars only
This guy has the right idea. Root the clones using 3/4" thick foam board from the big orange(or blue ) store (just poke a 1/8" diameter hole in the foam). If by seed, use a peat pellet. I found the peat pellets to be less problematic than rockwool (slow starting) or coco pellets ( partial micro nutrient lockout) for seedlings.Eventually those seedlings turn into mothers, you take your clones and put them in foam. Either black neoprene pre-cut collars or cut from a piece of 3/4" thick foam board with a reflective mylar coating (polyshield brand, obtainable from a building supply or the aforementioned stores) already in place.

I took a clone (cutting) off a plant dipped it in root gel and
stuck it in the soil and the clone grew into a big plant.
Never used rockwool to
get the clone going and it worked.

I germ in moist paper towels on a saucer with a saucer on top keeping it dark and then I wrap it in a blanket and put it in a warm, high area of my house. Others germ in a shot glass of water. I don't put into rockwool until the seed pops and there is about 1/4 inch root. I then place that (with tweezers) into the rockwool cube which has been soaking in PH adjusted water so that the seed is below the top surface of the rockwool cube, rip a small piece of rockwool off the side to cover it and throw it under a T5 in a humidity dome. This method as worked for me. I place into the hydro system/grow media when I see roots poking through the bottom of the rockwool. It's important to keep the cube moist but not waterlogged.

Thanks everyone for the replys. You guys told me what I needed to know. As for the medialess approach I think I will wait on that until I have everything setup properly and the extra space to play. I have plenty of room right now but in the process of setting everything up at the new location. The budget is pretty tight right now because I just dumped a ton into my two new grow rooms one veg the other bloom on top of this I already have to grow rooms veg/bloom on a cycle that I need to keep the budget to maintain. I would like to hear a little more about this medialess approach though maybe more details or a link I could go and read wouldbe awesome!! Thanks again

If water doesn't hit the rockwool, how will the plant get water...? I have always covered the rockwool with something reflective or more hydroton. SM-90 works well too if you are too lazy to cover the hydroton. With plenty of air flow (intake and exhaust) you shouldn't have any issues. Never ever have I had mold grow on rockwool. maybe I'm lucky? :)

I do this exactly! Hasn't failed once.
