1939. Grace Slick. Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship. Starship. White Rabbit

Here's the original version with the Great Society. If you're not a fan of San Francisco jam bands, and I'm not, fast forward to about 4 minutes and 30 seconds to hear Grace's vocals. I'm not a fan of any falsetto vocals, even Grace's.

As I said to my wife when I heard this, Grace ought to send Jack Casady a million dollar check every year, just for the intro to White Rabbit. The Great Society's version of this would probably not have been as successful.

Improvisation was the name of the game at the time. It was so free. They didn't have to adhere to the "under 3 minutes" standard. Adding to that was the emergence of FM radio. KPPC-FM in Pasadena, later KMET in L.A. were my faves. A great period for rock music. It didn't last long.

I could listen to The Allman Bros, Canned heat, and the Airplane jam on for hours on end, was just never into the Dead or the folk/jazz scene.
