Riddle Me This

Since this is my first official RIU.org Grow Journal I will be frank:

I don't keep records for shit.

With detailed information from such posters as email468 you can learn a lot.. I've always given it the good 'ole eye-ball. I have a certain bond with my babies.. they speak to me.. I speak to them.. its kinda wierd, I know...

OK.

So hey, are you cool maan?

So this is where we begin our little tryp down the rabbit hole.

Out of 14 *mystery* seeds 11 sprouted in a simple tray consisting of:

(2) Paper plates
(1) Paper towel
Tap water

They could have been put in a cup of water.. but I'd spill that shit.

After that they were set under a dual 24" T5 Sun Blaze Strip Light setup from the local store.. I wanted a light so bad I made them sell me what they were using because they didn't have it in stock!!!

Also purchased was this propagation tray, in three parts. The bottom tray catches run-off, the middle tray holds the medium and seedlings, and the lid holds in the moisture and heat for the early stages. Only 8 remain.. the other three were too runty to be kept.

This won't be needed again until cloning begins.

After about 4 days the lid came off and the babies shot out and then up!

I <3 fluoro's!

For roughly three weeks they sat under inadequate lighting, only 48 watts (w) and 4,000 Lumens (L). The new quad 48" T5 is coming soon.. 216w and 20,000L should be plenty for those sexy MILF's to be!

For the low lighting they came out beautiful!

(See picture above.. they are sleeping now.. so it won't be until morning that more pics will be posted.)

As far as soil goes, they've been snugly nestled in with Roots Organics soil mix.. let me give you a run-down of what this shit is:

Coco fiber, peat moss, perlite, pumice, compost, mulch, worm castings, bat guano, kelp meal, fish bone meal, soybean meal, feather meal, greensand, leonardite, and alfalfa meal. All organic.. love it!

1.5 cu. ft. for $20!

With this they really don't need any nutes.. but I give them a nice trickle of Botanicare Pro Grow and Karma mix.. very weak.. about 1/4 strength. Then.. when they're very naughty I spray them down with it!

For now they squat in 1/2 gal plastic bags ($0.15 ea.) awaiting the new light and larger containers. They get nutes about once a week, and plain tap water once a week. I can tell from the look of the soil, the smell of the plants, and the leaves when they want.. and what they want.. I also talk to them.. so I might have a screw loose, but I can't find it.. anyways...

I use a chinese piece of shit Accurite thermometer. It has the high/low for two temps and one hydro. I haven't seen anything over 60 Relative Humidity (RH) and 78 deg. Fahrenheit (F). I'll be switching to the metric system as it is easier to handle.. but I have to get the figures in my head first.. so keep up when I do! The thermometer also has a nifty little wire and exterior sensor I will be using later for exhaust temps...

There is a simple circular fan helping with the stalks and roots forming.. and yes, it makes a world of difference with a fan!

In the near future:
Quad 48" T5 fixture for veg
4' x 4' x 6.5' Dark Room grow tent (The good shit!)
Probably a 600w HPS with 6" vented hood (I'm still debating the 1000w HPS)
In-line fan w/ temp. controls (I still have to source a decently priced quiet one)
Ryoko's carbon air filter design w/ 6" flexible ducting
Air stones for a 35 gal Deep Water Culture (DWC) hydroponic setup w/ 3" net pots (63 total)
Botanicare Pro Soil & Pro Flower
Soiless medium for clones in hydroponics (Custom setup, you'll see...)
3-5 gal buckets/bags for soil flowering
Misc. other crap for clones and what not.. remember, I don't take notes.

Depending on the amount of females from this crop of eight will determine if I go ahead with a soil grow and prepare for DWC or go right into DWC.

Here is a quick shot of the reservoir (res) to be:

I've gone through four designs before settling on one, here's the link:

I got the first post!!!! :blsmoke: subscribed till the end buddy, cant wait to see this monster!
Honestly, I just want some clean green away from the black market out here. Nothing but shit.

The DWC is for novelty.. and I figure I smoke a lot so...

New Pics!!!

Check my gallery for details:

T5's will burn your plant.. this one shot up overnight with the 18/6 lighting schedule and she learned the hard way. I monitor growth much closer now.

Keep cats away from marijuana.. it is very similar to cat-nip.. they will try to eat it!

I've noticed the leaves almost double in size over two days of using the foliar spray!

Just found a food dehydrator in the attic!!!!

It has about 10 trays in it.. I suspect about 100g can be dried at a time with this thing!

your plants definitely look indica :D

how are you going to cure your plants?

have you looked into water curing? it seems interesting :D

nice and bushy - looking good enigma

i have to keep copious notes otherwise i have no idea what the hell i'm doing! But i'm glad you found them useful :joint:

I agree with We TaRdED - it looks Indica to me and that is about as good as my guess is going to get.

How about some hints? I am interested because i have a mystery seed from a seed bank going and they look very similar to me!

the one in front is the one i'm talking about - the one in back is a Big Bud seed i had around...

i wish i had some Big Bud seeds laying around! ahhh, its all good though.

im growing some WW, Ice, and some mystery sativa plant-not too enthused about the sativa, as its taking FOREVER to mature :(. im also doing a little breeding and cross breeding all these plants. ohh and i have two afghani too, but they are maturing slowly. i did cross some Ice with an afghani.

i LOVE sativas - but they do take a long time to finish. but i love the highs - upbeat and energetic!

ya, the highs are better for sure.
like i said, im making some F1's(and pure breeds) so i will have the sativa crossed with WW and Ice also.
it has a very different smell compared to the other plants. it stinkier in a skunky(? hard to explain?) way. my other strains smell sweeter.

I know lots of folks like the couch-lock and I think Indicas are usually recommended for medicinal purposes. I prefer the other - though i'm not sure either are better (i don't say no to Indicas in fact i have 4 of them going now).

The only sativa i'm familiar with is the PPP and it smelled more like evergreens than anything else (though the odor we know and love was there as well). this latest batch have already started to smell even in veg only 20 days old! i think there is a skunk amongst them.

Looks good thus far.

Could you discuss the leaf cutting method you use? I know it's to stop growth of certain leaves, but how is the end result different? I'm a newb and trying to learn to listen to my babies, but they only gurgle and coo right now. I'm trying to learn from the best, and you definitely seem to have a formula down from experience. Care to share?

are you going to be topping or FIMing your plants enigma??

that way you will have more viable cutting sites! seems like a good time to do it :D

You are very right, they are all indica.

It won't be until flowering that these babies will really show their colors.. but I still have to sex them. After the Quad T5's come in they will be sexed under blue light so I can return them to veg quickly. I just need to know who is who and name the right ones.. I hope I get TWO male and SIX female!! That way I can propagate some seeds for future uses!

The best way I've found to keep seeds is to vaccum seal them and freeze them.. they can last about 2 years this way.

I'd rather have a mix of sativas with my indicas.. I'll just wait until I have a safe place to order some seeds.. then that energetic high email was talking about will be realized! It is my favourite.

My favourite strains are:
Supa Skunk
Afghan
Jack Herrer
Northern Lights
Virginia Mist
Fruity Pebbles (special homegrown mix)
...and a few others I can't think of right now.. and in no particular order.

email, those pics looks really juicy! We shall see what transpires during flowering.. before then it could be anyone's guess.

At the start I try to keep my babies from over-growing each other. The 1/2gal bags they are in don't provide much for area but great for volume (roots). Under the tiny Dual 24" T5 they tend to overlap.. I trim them back so they stay within their pot sizes. I've been spending weeks sourcing new equipment (left old equipment with ex.. dumb ass!) so I've been in no rush to get anywhere with these. As they get their third set of leaves I prune off the first set, after the fourth set I prune off the second set.. only if I know they can handle it! Then I let them bush out. No more pruning.. only trimming the leaf edges if they need it.

Pruning/trimming a plant will always stress it!

Another thing, one plant got burned on one of the larger fan leaves from growing up over-night (18/6 light schedule, I'll go into this further) and I won't trim it back until there are enough fan leave to take its place. If too many leaves are taken the plant could become stunted, hermied, or die.

Since soil grows slower than hydro, I will be very patient.

Now, the Quad 48" T5's are coming in soon and then I will be sexing and toping them when they get about 12" tall. Floor space is an issue, so I'm trying to find a middle ground of bush and height to fit the area. These will be mothers/doners and also some will go right into flowering when the rest of the equipment arrives.

Eventually these mother plants (and hopefully a father or two) will be about 24" max with everything from the first 1/3 (bottom) of the plant will be removed so they will concentrate on the canopy due to lighting. This will produce ample doner branches for clones later on. The males will be matured enough to extract pollen and then killed. Only a few buds will be fertilized for seeds.. they will produce a lot.

Ok, the 18/6 lighting method explained (simply):

On a long summer day the planet Earth will experience about 16 hours of light. Then the rotation will cause darkness for about 8 hours. I've chosen to use the 18/6 light schedule to allow the plants a good amount of time to produce sugar (photosynthesis) that is just a little bit longer than normal conditions.

While the plants are being hit with light photons, and taking in CO2 through osmosis, the chemical reaction in the fan leaves produce this sugar (carbohydrates) for growth. Now, the fan leaves are the sugar factories.. be very careful in trimming and pruning these!

During the 'day' period, the plants will synthesize sugars for growth. At the same time they are using the suagrs.. a lot of work for a plant!

During the 'night' period, there is no light to make sugar.. so the plants stop working, and stop using CO2, and begin building with the sugars they have stored.

Every 'morning' I notice a huge difference in the plants in either hieght or bush due to the 'building' time they had while they 'slept'.

Another good thing to note is using a foliar spray on the fan leaves, not the bud. During veg, spraying the leaves directly with a light concentration of nutes, and catalysts, rushes the nutrition right to the leaves.. no need to go through soil.. roots.. stalk.. stems.. leaves! Through osmosis the 'building blocks' go right to the leaves where they are needed most.

If you have any more questions I'll be glad to shed some light!
