From grow faq:
(Don't use copper or nickel coils)
Thinking of making a rez chiller from a Peltier...

Seen the ice probes @ coolworksinc.com and sticker shock...

It would be easy to make one of these but i was thinking about using copper coil at the end... Why is copper bad for the rez... ??

copper can react with certain nutes and ph levels letting copper break down into your res so it is not best to use but other things can replace it. We had a good chiller and how to session this summer when it was hot out.Lotta options. The chill probe thing your talking about wont really work as its for such small tanks and only drops a few degrees so youd need a few.Lookinto using mini fridges, window a/c units modified, water coolers you get drinking water from at work. Those can all help.Someone also just barred a long length of hose under ground outside his hose then covert ran it back into the basement and forced water via a pump through it as the cool ground cooled the circulating water by 15 degrees.

Looking for something relatively small... And Peltier is as small as it come in the way of heating and cooling... Even 3 home made Peltier coolers done right could get you 12 degrees... I was thinking you could probably get more out of it with a good coil insted of that little bar... More surface area = more cooling...

I like the covert hose idea to cool the ground but its a bit intensive and not practical for my situation but it spawns good ideas... =]

Trying to go smaller than a bread box on this one... =]

I had a feeling you would be the 1st to chime in on this one... Thanks for the input Filthy... =]

lol is that good or bad you thought id take the bait lol.I always forget to not assume large 50 or so gallon res as standard lol yeah Im sure youd figure it out. I started a mini fridge build but it got cold and dint need it so I stopped lol.Ill keep an eye out and see what everyone comes up with for inspirations post if you figure yours out.Im also cheap so I build my own stuff

I just saw your plans for the chiller so i figured you would be of the intrested parties... =]

I just like the satisfaction of having built my own stuff... Plus they just dont make half the $#!t i want... =]

Also thought about canabalizing parts from something like this...

Yeah well $400 for me means Ill be Mr Wizard and figure it out lol I do more then a couple plants but hate the thought of paying full price for anything I know is overpriced lol. I almost bought a 2 hp saltwater tank chiller for $200 but the shipping was another $125 so passed it up lol

That looks like a scene out of the matrix... =]

7 deg is not to shabby for just fans... You might want to wrap the outside of that with insulation... It would help deflect that heat as well... =]

Going back to my original question what about aluminum... ??

Is that OK for your res... ??

Insider the MATRIX is his reservoir... =]

Or rather his rez IS the matrix... =0

No i have not tried the iceprobe but i just bought a TEC module on ebay and will be trying to use it to pump cooled water into the res... I am thinking about getting a cpu water block that is ALL aluminum... Or making my own water block but the most desirable choice is aluminum...

This is why i am curious as to weather aluminum is ok for the res...

How do you suggest you whip up this cooling system... ??

For me it would have to be small and not invasive as i have a limited amount of space in and around my area...

And of course inexpensive... =P
