reoccuring bannanas from what was a stable mother?

so ive been growing nirvanas northern lights for almost 2 yrs now with no real complaints. i dont actually keep a mother, i clone off of my veg plants before they go into flower...occasionaly a week or two into flower.

4 harvests ago i let one go extra long to get bannanas to make some fem seeds. 2 harvests after that i pull one a week early because its got some 'nannas. at the time i had a crappy door on the flower room and figured it was a light leak and fixed the door. but ever since then i get 'nannas about a week from harvest. i either pick them off or harvest early depending on how many there are and how lazy im feeling.

but i dont want to continue with these genetics(i love the smoke!) if theyre gonna continue to be gender-confused.

what do you people think?

seeds made by a hermie are always going to give you a chance to make nanners. The reason seedbank fem seeds work is because of their selective breeding of herm resistant plants. This is one of the key reasons most sativa crosses get a little indica in them. Sativas have always been known, (even in pure form without hermie genetics) to not favor any kind of sexual consistency so by crossing them with many of the landrace indicas who already posses natural resistance to it, you get this into your genetics to counteract the self pollination.

TLDR Homemade fem seeds don't work

no, you misunderstood. im talking about the original NL mother ive been growing for 2 yrs without a hitch is starting to spit nanners.

and i used nanner pollen from an overripe female to make thoses beans, not a stressed or genetic hermie. its sopposed to be different. so far they all produce girlies, no tuckers yet.

Self pollination is self pollination, regardless of how you accomplish it.

Those nanners are a sign that she is making a last ditch effort to get pregnant. I notice those on my girls late into flowering towards the end sometimes. Infact at times I have used those nanners as one of the signs for being ready for harvest. Are you thinking of throwing your monster momma into the flower room. She'll probably throw out some nice nugs.........

i know about the last ditch effort thing. i thought usually they only happen on overripe plants.

like i said...no actual mother, i clone from my veg plants.

thanks for the replies.

I'll throw in my two cents from what my biology professor, and also a great grower of plants told me years ago about clones. You are making a copy of a copy and you are triggering different genes in the proceeding grows. He went on about this but the jest was after a point you are bound to get all kinds of different grows from the plant as it cloned.........I have never cloned a plant as long as you have but seems like you might have reached the point of diminishing returns on your mother. Hope I didn't bore you.

not a bore at all. this "multiplicity" theory is shared by quite a few. and although there could be some merit to it, i know loads of growers who clone from clones of clones for literally decades with no trouble. now they may have more stable genetics than i do but then again, NL is one of our oldest classic strains.

thanks for the reply

right now ive got 4 at different stages of flowering, 4 in veg, and 4 in the cloner. im not going to take any more clones untill i get this sorted out. i really want to keep this strain but if i have to do away with the NL then so be it.

It can just be the plant itself, something must of made it turn on a gene to give you the hermies. There are so many genes and the littlest thing can trigger the onset of this gene, that is why we get hermies in the first place NL is a good strain, I have grown it with good sucess in the past myself. I would not give up on the gene just try a different plant or get a new batch of seeds to start over. As for people keeping a mother for such a period as decades they are very lucky or know more than most people. I clone many variety of plants and it is hard, if not impossible to get past the times they replicate and keep the life span of the parent or do not throw up a different gene in time. Hope that you keep the strain going even if you have to start a new plant to do it.........:joint::mrgreen:

I've been dealing with NL x SHIVA. Been growing this strain for 6 months now. At the beginning, we started seeing the 'nanners' in 2 different phenotypes. We then got a couple seeds. prolly was a light leak. recently the nanners and seeds have diminshed...we think we fixed the light leak. We are about to throw in the mom we've had since the get go, i'll keep u posted. I've heard what canefan has said from multipe people, but also know some peepz that have had their moms for 2-3yrs. Since i've been deaing with these tranny bitches, it has made me appreciate my afghanicas the most b/c the r the most resistant to nanners.

These kids are tough as hell, I had one that was runover with a lawn mower twice, got transplanted and is now budding outside in the 18 hour + lighting. Somehow it's revegged twice and started nugging, without herming. It was from an extra batch of clones I stuck out in my greenhouse because I didn't want to kill them, the mom just needed a haircut so often I had to throw them away or make more clones. Seeds made from a REAL MALE win~

i thought i made it very clear that the plant in question is from regular seed stock. maybe i never should have mentioned the fem seeds because they have nothing to do with the issue at hand and seem to be causing some confusion.

The plants i have the trouble with are clones from nirvanas northern lights ive been growing for a couple years now without issue. a few harvests ago i started noticing a few nanners here and there around 2-3 wks from finish. i originally thought they were from light leaks but have ruled that out. im pretty consistently getting male flower parts on every plant i harvest( i usually harvest one a week).

get new seeds. mothers shouldent be kept for more than two-three yrs. i know its not from a mother but the genetics are and they are 2yr old. new gens might help

i know at least a dozen people who keep mother plants for years and years and years. its my belief that that one is a myth.

ive stopped cloning the NL because im still getting nanners about 2 wks from harvest. ive got several more rounds on deck to flower but om not starting any more. its not overripness, its not light leaks, no other stresses.

this blows. this NL is damn fine smoke and i will miss it. my only comfort is knowing i have some of its genes in my NLxNYC Diesel.

:peace:
