Red wigglers?

i was doing some weeding in the yard and came across some worms. I’m just wondering if anyone is able to tell which are red wigglers? And if you can help me to distinguish the difference.

Thanks, was planning on upgrading my worm bin from a 5 gallons bucket to a 20 gallon tote, could use some extra worms!!

I used worms from my yard for my worm bins. Any worms will work. A topdress of fresh ewc at 2 and 4 weeks of flower will produce amazing results!!

Best thing you can do for the highest quality pot is to start a worm bin!!

It's hard to tell from photo but they are a nightcrawler, Red Wigglers. Red Wigglers tend to be smaller than other variety of composting worms. They should work for composting and if you already have red Wigglers, just Transfer them to a bigger container with proper bedding. Feed them bananas and you will have more worms in no time. In my experience red Wigglers love banana.

Put a handful of actual red wigglers in your palm they will wiggle and squirm out in moments
Those look like regular earthworms aka nightcrawlers

Yeah a few of them looked darker red and a bit more like the wigglers I have, just hard to tell, and even harder from the picture!

So if they were added to my worm bin, would that be good or bad? Only bad I can think is that’s night crawlers and larger and don’t eat as much, so they would take up precious red wiggler room!

So what do you guys think? Add them to worm bin or add them to my compost bin/raised garden beds?

It can't hurt, maybe later you can do a worm battle :grin:

You can never have to many worms. I put a small handful in my 1 gallon pots when I transplant from solo cups. For my indoor grows, 4 and 6 gallon planters, I put quite a few into each pot during transplant. For my 20 gallon outdoor planters, I put a nice handful in!!!

ill add to my outdoor pots, my indoor will be no-till, I think red wigglers would be best for that.

Mixing my soil for organic no-till as we speak!

Red wigglers like to stay on the top and night crawlers will like the bottom. So, they really won't be invading on eachother. If you have worms in your yard, you should make a worm bin with a ladder for them into a bin. I never have to add worms to my bin, they just show up on their own. The night crawlers usually look like snakes in my compost. I found a pic with both:

Yeah it gets quite cold up here and I don’t have a ton of room in my yard for a large worm bin, so a 20 gallon will have to do, and I‘ll keep it in my basement which is usually around 65-70 degrees.

Any good suggestions on how to make the worm bin? There are so many designs, but I’d like one that doesn’t have open holes. I was thinking about maybe cutting the lid and putting some mesh/screen instead.
