Recommended strains for HOT climate?

Greetings all, I've been reading these forums for quite a while now, and am very impressed with the friendliness of the folks here, and the wealth of information being shared.

I'm planning for my first backyard grow next spring, and the problem is that I'm in Sacramento. For those not familiar with the area, it gets quite hot in the summer (16 days over 100F so far this year).

Are there any varieties that will survive and maybe even thrive in baking heat?

Sativa's are better suited for hot climates - props to canefan

Can you plant in the ground so the root zone stays cool?

Hey I found this: Durban Poison Marijuana Strains
This makes it a real good outdoor marijuana strain. A great marijuana plant for hot temperatures. A tight bud Sativa with a candy smell and an up high. ...

I'll be planting in the ground for two reasons; the first being root temps, and the second being the overall height of the plants. I need to stay below the top of the fence for obvious reasons.

the prolly wont stay below the fence if you put them in the ground unless you have an 8-10ft fence
2 to 5 gal pots are your best bet

Then I'll top them or tie them down. They can't grow in pots in my back yard, it's just too hot. It'd boil the roots.

boil the roots eh ?

ps: in pots you can move them indoors if need to

I've got to second green cross on the DP. It loves the heat, and responds very well to trimming or tying down. Takes a looooong time to bud, but worth the wait! They are an African strain, so Cal. heat should be no problem.

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. I'll look into the Durban Poison. Sounds like it might be just the thing. I've also read that the Afghanis are fairly heat tolerant, and wondering if anyone has any input there.

dsm-
I live in the foothills outside of Yosemite ntl park. VERY HOT HERE, over 30 days of 100+ heat, and more to come next week i see too. I have MASTER KUSH, PURPLE KUSH, BLUEBERRY, MIND BENDER x AFGHANGOO, STRAWBERRY COUGH, and a few BAG SEEDS in the ground and no issues at all with the heat. I got up to 108+ this year in my garden and they all came through just fine. There are strains better adapted to the heat, and do better in the heat, but if you keep them watered, you can grow most any strain in the heat.
In saying that, I plan on growing Jack Herer, and some Durban Poison next year plus a few others.

Good Luck

lol i learned this from 1st hand exp..

but the bigger the pot the less chance for this to happen. you could also cover the pots from direct sunlight which will help considerably.

either way go with a sativa/sativa dom plant.

you should be able to use just about any equatoral strain . given your geographical location i would use a mexican sativa.
hope this helps.....
