RDWC slow growing. funky looking leaves. what do you think?

Hello Community it's nice to join you all.
I'm having a few issues with my grow and I'm in need of some advice, I have done multiple grows with zero success in the early stages of growth, I am slowly getting the jist though, but not quick enough and maybe the community can point something out for me so let me give you guys and gals a bit of a set-up introduction.
My room is roughly 3.2m X 1.5m and 2.3m in height, I use 2 black dog LED photmax-2 200 with my RDWC system. The RDWC is hooked up to a chiller that keeps my water temperature around 18-19c (64.5-66F)

I run 2 decent size oscillating fans that provide good air flow. I have my temperature sitting between 24-25C (75F – 78F) @ lights on, and 19C-21C (68F – 70F) @ lights off. I try to run humidity at 60% most times, every now and the I forget to fill before work and it may drop rapidly to 35% for 5-6 hours.
Also, my exhaust system is set up to replace the air in the room every 1.5-2 minutes
I have 2 plant vessels, and a reservoir I use to access my water, roughly 70L of water the system holds before the levels are touching the bottom of the net pot. I use Cyco Platinum nutrients (silica, A+B’s, zyme and Ryzo-fuel), my ppm usually sits around 300 at early growth although I did have it at 650 the other day (oops).

Ps. My water that I use is rain water.

My journey has been very slow, I started off in 1 inch rock wool and they germinated fairly quickly, I soaked for 26 hours of 1% h202 water, the seeds shells were cracked so I placed them in the rock wool 6mm deep (¼ inch). After 6 days a couple roots had appeared out of the bottom, the seeds had popped one had a shell stuck for like 5 days so I helped get it off. all good and well BUT this is possibly where I screwed things up; ill come home from work them days and dip the bottom of the rockwool in some fresh 19c (68F) water and it would end up just soaking the whole damn thing anyways, the thing was id dunk it after work and it would be dry fairly quick, I'd try to take advice from online about not over watering rock wool but this was drying out pretty damn quick, although the longest time I can't be with it is 10 hours, sometimes id dunk that night and next morning it would be dry as shit, then and try dunk day and night to keep it a bit more wet with not much signs of growth. So, on day 14 I chucked it in my DWC system and after like 2 and a half weeks she started growing (hallelujah). That’s my beginnings.

My question with this is, when a root or two start to poke from the bottom of the rock wool should I stop wetting the cube and get a small bubbleponic bucket and net pot going, have it lightly splash up below the cube and get them root tips a little moist?

Moving on.

Now that my babies are growing it’s good to see and makes me happy, I've seen progress over the last 2 weeks but they are slow as fuck. The leaves are growing in pretty weird ways too, some discoloration ill add some photos I started taking from last week.

Let me know your thoughts people. Was my rockwool moistening skills horrible? Did that impact my early growth ya think? Are they just baggage?

Peace

Rkymtnman. Do you think he is having slowed growth from the low water temps he is running? 64.5-66F I thought that was kind of low for DWC don’t they grow faster at 69-70f?
65F would be the lowest i would go. so he/she's not too far off.
but you are correct: they like higher temps but so does root rot. so a catch-22.

I read there is more oxygen at lower temps so I could be right at the threshold, I also forgot to mention I'm running a sterile setup.
thank you for the quick responses people, I love it

I did only use 1/3 strength Cyco A that has 4% calcium, perhaps I should dose her up?

light on 2pm to 8am (18-6)
with rain water (same as RO basically), i would maybe use a cal/mg additive. i'm not familiar with cyco though.

i veg 24/0 as do a lot of others. they don't need a dark period in veg.

Number one problem the rockwool, plus a large amount of hydroton that never gets enough water to encourage the roots to grow out into it.. You'll notice the roots growing straight down under the rockwool.. When you water it from the top and only water the RW,, the surrounding hydroton stays to dry to encourage roots to grow outward.. The plant looks great.. It's to late for my solution which would be to have added a GH dripring.

my electricity bills don't mind a dark period though, plus I can't grow where I'm from so it's probably good I don't raise it if I don't have to.

I'm using oxy plus its a h202 additive, I'm thinking of buying slf 100 I think that might help keep things sterile but I'm yet to find it in my area

I use rockwool, when in net pot I have bubbles hitting the bottom.I dont top water.Works fine for me.

way easier to keep temps and RH% stable. closer node spacing. less time in veg.
good point,

I used 12ml of cal-mag to the system the time you brought it up but didnt have time to have a look at em yesterday but I got the chance to fill the humidity tanks before running out so environment is stable. but tonight i went to check them out, and they got more problems surfacing. not sure what it is, roots still looking good

Hydroton does not wick water, that's a simple fact.. A basket full of rockwool, like Mikes' will wick water if bubbles hit the bottom of the basket.. That doesn't work very well with a big basket full of hydroton... You could raise the water level up to the bottom of the basket. You've got the heat problem licked.. How many plants are you running? If you could add another grow bucket with a GH air driven drip ring, it might change your way of thinking.. This is a simple system with an air driven dripring and 9 liters of hydroton.... It doesn't even use air stones.. It would be worth reading Pineapple Express G13 Lab's Seed to Harvest | Rollitup

I have never used Cal-Mag with the Cyco line (8 complete grows), that shouldn't be an issue for them, Ryzo Fuel and Zyme I believe are both organic matter so I dont use them either.

As for OP in regards to seedlings, what I will do with my seedlings, is once the roots poke out on the 1" rockwool cubes I will put them into the baskets and hydroton clays, with pure RO almost touching the bottom of the baskets, I will leave the airstones running; however once or twice a day Ill take about 80ml or so and water them from the top until I see roots coming out of the baskets themselves once this is achieved, Ill stop top feeding them. When the first set of 3 finger leaves are visable. Ill dump the RO water and Ill add like 0.2EC to 0.3EC of nutrients (going back into my cyco journal) into fresh RO. I will run them nutrients for 2 weeks dump and go to 0.5EC for the following two weeks.

Cyco Nuets are great but you constantly have to deal with the pH swings with it until you find that sweet spot or E.C., its a lot harder for you in an RDWC as what works for some plants may not work with others, for an DWC you can see each individual plants pH levels and their own needs. Every grow I've done is start from seed, never have done clones. and to save on water I use 3g buckets until I flip the lights then use 5g there on out.

Im with rkymtnman on the 24/0 veg.
I wonder more of less about the rain water you are using, it may have some funky bacterial growth in it anyways hopefully you get it all resolved and happy growing !

lol. completely false. that's a fact.

LECA has three very desirable growing properties:
  1. It is extremely porous. This provides abundant air and oxygen to the roots of plants. Lack of oxygen is a major cause of plant loss, particularly for interior plants. The healthy roots are less prone to disease and rotting.
  2. It has capillary properties. This means that dry LECA absorbs water and wicks it upwards (often 8-10” upward or more) to provide water to the plants.
  3. It does not compact or decay over time (organic-based soils do). This helps aid in the delivery of air to the roots of the plants

i agree with your EC range: i like 0.3 for seedlings, 0.6 for early veg, 1.2 for veg/bloom, 0.6 for last 2 weeks.
