okay i am under a tight budget... and already started my grow about a week ago... doing fine but have a question about the lights... as of right now i have 4 (42w) CFL's in a home made reflector... i was wondering... because i know that for flowering the plant needs lights in the red spectrum around 2700K well the 4 lights i have are 3000k each is that okay to flower with??? if not... i want to get an envirolite 125w red spectrum light bulb but have been unable to find one! please help! thanks

if you have the 'soft' of 'warm' floros you will be ok to flower with them but to really get killer nugs you wanna go hps as for the envirolite i am unsure id see wot one of the more experianced members say

Compact Fluorescents (or CF's) are fluorescent lights that can be plugged into a regular incandescent (normal light bulb) fixture.

They are advertised as 'Energy Saving Light bulbs'. Don’t confuse their advertised wattage and actual wattage! The advertised wattage (usually in LARGE letters) will say something like “100w”. Usually hidden is the actual wattage (say 10w-30w). This rating indicates the CF emits as much light as a 100w incandescent bulb, but uses only 10w-30w.

The 10-30w bulbs will work in your regular lamp or light fitting. The 31-50w bulbs (preferred for growing) are made for outdoors, and require an outdoor light fitting.

Placing Compact Fluorescents
Fluorescent lights do not have the penetrating power of HID lights, so they must be placed very close to the plants, either horizontally or vertically, preferably several CF’s to illuminate both sides of the plant(s).
The CF should be mounted about 5cm away from the plant. Too far and they'll stretch, too close and they’ll burn! Yes, plants will suffer burnt tips if placed too close.

A good homemade reflector (highly recommended with low power floros) can be made from aluminum. Put a hole through the bottom big enough to get your CF through.

You can take a plant through its entire cycle using CF's but I would strongly, advise flowering with an HID, even if it's only 250w. This will vastly boost potency and yield.

There are only three reasons to use CF's for an entire cycle: 1. an extremely tight budget or, 2. no space, or 3. HID’s are too hot for your grow.

I would like to add a couple of points.

1) IMHO forget wattage. Look at total lumens vs the area in your grow and the total number of plants. I try to maintain no less than 4000 lumens/sf. My current config is 20,000 lumens and is in an area of 36x18.

2) As Mogie said above, take advantage of the low heat output of CFLs. Bring them close and have some beneath the canopy. You will see the difference.

3) Low budget is great, but you want 6500k for growth. Switch to the 2700k's for flowering.

You were asking about the 125x CFL. In my experience (granted limited compared to many here) I go with more lower wattage lights. They produce much less heat, easier to cool, and allow me to place light where I need it. If you have good ventilation, you can get within a cm of a 26w CFL without burning your grow.

I hope this helps.

You will be disappointed if you use floros to flower with. You can take a plant through its entire cycle using CF's but I would strongly, advise flowering with an HID, even if it's only 250w. This will vastly boost potency and yield.

I don't see the point of getting 4 100 watters cause that inturn causes you to have to get 4 ballasts thus meening 4 outlets being taken up, and having to hook them all up to timers and this and that. See where I'm coming from?

actually these 100 watt ones can be used in the 150 watt plug in house outlets... i wouldn't need any ballasts i found these 100 watt light bulbs that were hps lights.... do you think its a good idea?

I am about to flower with CFLs. Granted, I have an interesting setup and a lot of CFLs. Based on how well they are currently growing, I do believe they will flower well. Right or wrong I will post the restults and progress here.

There has to be a ballast... anyways how much would it cost you for those 4 lights??? You can get a 400w HPS & ballast for less then $150 CDN.

Where can you get these ballast? They sell the hps lights at homedepot but nobady there can point me in the direction, of the fixture to use them. I will be starting my 18/6 regiment in the next few days. Right now I am using 2 4' daylight bulbs and 2 4' sunshine bulbs. If i cant find the ballast to run the hps, money is kinda tight, i will try the full grow this way and maybe try the hps for the next grow.

if i wanted more light for a grow, would it be good to have a hps light and have cfl's aiming at the sides of the plant? in a reflector?
