Questions about rock wool, water level in decent, and hydrogen....help :-(

I have a basic 4 plant system in a 4 gallon reservoir. Question one...what is the proper full water level? The directions say high enough so the net pot bottoms are covered by 1 inch of water. I have heard others say water should be just level with the net pot bottoms? Second how do you germinate from seeds in rock wool? being a first time, I chose to squirt rock wool so saturated, and squeeze off excess water so damp. Then put seeds in 1/4 inch deep. My hydrogen looks like its dry on top of the net pots now after a few days. normal?

first what kind of system are you using? DWC, aeroponics, other? when I did DWC I filled it till the watter came half an inch onto the net pot then lowered the level as the roots came down into the water. it's just as easy to germinate in rock wool as it is to do it any other way, just shove em in there and keep it moist, and for what you're doing with your rock wool just follow the directions on the package. and I think you mean hydroton, and as far as that goes yeah it gets dry on the top sometimes just spray it with some water now and then.

if its dwc just depinds if you have roots showing just have the water about a inch under the net pots so the roots grow down to it as the roots grow more you can lower the level but you can have the roots sitting in it lowest i lower mine is 4 inch below net pot after that i let my roots sit in the water bc the air bubbles also the bubbles that pop onto the top of the water splash the roots if showing i hand watered mine till the roots showed then let my dwc bubble do all the work

My system is the standard stealth hydro decent 4 plant 4 gallon reservoir. Thanks for the tip on lowering the water level as the root system gets more established. Will also most the top of the hydroton to keep it moist.

This dog is barking in the right direction. Listen to him. Seriously. Then enjoy success you won't believe. Finding this all out on my own in the middle of AK and I do just like he describes from seed-into-rockwool-direct to res levels. Consider horticultural grade pumice. Cheap and available at places like Wal Mart where the vermiculite and perlite are. Rinse well with clean water to clear any dust away and go to town. I would have to be sold on a different medium now and it is widely used in hydroponics with numbers of users growing as Hydroton is (supposedly) no longer made.
