Question: Is it a waste of energy to start seeds with a 400w M/H?

I am a first time grower with a question that is probably really dumb. I was wondering is it wasting energy to use my 400w to germ my seeds, and therefore should I use a CFL for the first couple of weeks? I have a little cloning tray right now, and was thinking of cutting ahole to throw two cfl's in there, but was worried about heat. Other plan would be to just lower my 400w light and shine it above the cloning tray.

I always recommend using CFLs for that reason. CFLs are really good for small plants and clones anyways.

You probably want to run your 400 for a while anyway if you haven't already used it just to moniter your temps though.
