can anyone answer at what stage or week in flowering the buds really begin to swell and pack on the most weight?

the last week or two is when they fatten up the most. After about 4 weeks you have perfectly smokeable bud, but it's immature. 5 weeks it starts to look like bud. 6 weeks you're just waiting...waiting..... when they "look" done, wait a week and they'll really fatten up.

my friend is at the beggining of week 6 now and was expecting the buds to be a lot fatter cuz he is using 2000 watt hps. so hopefully they will explode over the next few weeks. anyone else have any other opinions?

a fertilizer high in Potassium helps to bulk up buds, some growers cheat up their weight by feeding sugar solutions molasses is the best as it contains potassium.

yeah he is going to implement using molasses next watering. hopefully that will help. so the last 2 weeks is when the plants really pack on the most weight?

Molasses feeds the micro-organisms in the soil and they help to convert nutes in the soil into nutes that can be taken up by the plant, molasses should be used throughout the grow - not just at the end.
Sugar is pretty useless to the plant, the plant makes its own "sugars" it doesn't suck them from the ground.

it's strain dependant, Sativa buds never really bulk up nor do the frost up that much yet they'll get you really high. That's why it's never grown for comercial grows.

well he is using organic soil so atleast i would assume starting to use it now through the last 4 to 5 weeks is better than not using it at all

it also depends on the strain you're growing. Some strains finish in 6 weeks. Most take about 8. Some sativas can take up to 10-12 weeks. If you have a mostly sativa blend, you're not even going to get decent buds until about 6-7 weeks in. Then the waiting game takes over. You CAN smoke 'em, but waiting will only benefit ya.

I Beg to Differ This Super Lemon Haze Bulks Up Just Fine For A Sativa And Is Covered In Long Thrichs.... It Takes 12 weeks Of 12/12 to get there tho....And most Commercial Growers aren't willing to go the extra month.... It's not that they don't produce Because some Do :)

I don't think your NPK values are as important as is what combination of nutes are you putting in...I like to alternate my nutes throughout waterings, this helps with a more consistent grow and not many problems. I still use nutes of course that go with the course of the grow, but switching different kinds around and not using all in the same watering helps out a bunch with how the plant responds to it.

SLH has indica genetics in it as well

So does just about every other "non land race" strain of Sativa.... the kind of Sativa one would order from a seed bank... most are mutts and crosses... But it's mostly Sativa And The extended flowering time and thin Leaf structure give it's heritage away ..the point of the post was to show that one may have to wait quite a bit more than 8-9 weeks to get good Buds from a more sativa Plant it may take a month or two longer than normal Indica's 8 weeks to start to bulk up and frost over.... as the original quote i took said that sativa doesn't bulk up or get frosty is not true it just takes a long wait to get there
