Question about lighting cycles

When switching from 18/6 to 12/12, what should i do and why... let the lights switch on at the same time, or let them go out at the same time? And allso, i read in an article that in veg stage, giving your plants 1 hour of light during the night cycle increases the chances of ending up with females. Does anyone have any experience with that because i also read that sex is predetermined.

well theres 24hrs in a day, so ya you want to keep the same schedule every day if you can if not it stresses them

I myself prefer to have the lights always come on at the same time throughout the life of the plant. Also personally I don't think adding an hour fo light in the night cycle will do anything except confuse the plant.

I personally think sex is predetermined, I posted something about it awhile back. It went into a little detail on how the chromosomes work and all that technical stuff.

Everyone you talk to is probably going to switch a different way, I just set it for whatever hours I plan on leaving it on the next day. I just turn the lights off from 24/7 12 hours before I want them to come back on again, then set the timer accordingly. I doubt you cause any damage to the plant no matter how you do it as long as you get it on a regular cycle.

You can also read a 100 theories about doing different light cycles but 24/7 and 12/12 is the standard that works and going below 12 hours can cuase different problems so it is best to stick with what works and after you get good at growing and want to experiment then feel free to but there is a reason why those hours are standard.

thnx for the quick replies people,
la9, can you give me a link to your post with the technical stuff, i'm interested in reading that,if possible.
i want to add something to your 24/7 12/12 cycle being standard. it seems that 24/7 instead of any other veg cycle WITH a dark period, seems to weaken your rooting system, or so i have been told in this forum by a guy who read up on it and experimented a little with that. and my neighbour has been experimenting a couple of grows with the lighting in bloom phase, and he claims (read carefully i say he CLAIMS :) ) that 11h45 instead of 12 hours makes his plants start fruiting about a week earlier.
I added "..and why"because I'm trying to find a link between plants fruiting as early as possible and the way light cycles are switched.

hey there, sorry if i'm being a pain in the ass but would you care to elaborate on that? :)
when i want to start flowering i will turn the lights off for 24hrs then start my 12/12. it seems to jump start things:hump:

All of this has to do with my question, that's why i added "..and why". I'm trying to find a link between plants fruiting as early as possible and the way light cycles are switched.
Like I said you will get 100 different opinions on light cycles 24/7 18/6 it's all standard. Maybe your buddy is getting better results, maybe he just wants to be a little different, maybe he wants to be the person that discovered something new, I don't see 15 minutes a day making a whole lot of difference. You can do a lot of reading on it if you want the info is out there. I think the 12/12 is standard because you start running into problems if you go shorter, so it is safest to have at leats 12 hours so you don't run into problems. I think you might actually produce more buds going 10 hours but it starts putting the plant in survival mode and causing it to produce some male pollen sacs to make sure it lives on and you don't want that. I'm sure every lighting schedule known to man has been tried and those are the two that work.

thnx for the link, and yes i agree, personally i will stick to 12/12 bloom cycle.
btw, now that i think about it, feminized seed IS predetermined so that kinda answered my question :)

I can't see how have 15 mins more or less light in the flowering stage would make it flower sooner. I think your buddy is "F"ing with you. It just doesn't sound like it would have that effect.

That's what i told him, ofcourse i know him for a couple of years now and i have no reason not to believe him, that's why i wanted to hear other people about this. Let's say he's not making it up, but if i take it with a grain of salt, fruiting could start as much as a few days earlier maybe, i just don't know because i find it hard to believe even though i trust him on the matter.

you can switch either way, some let them stay of for 24 hours first (supposed to star flowering sooner ?)
The lights on for an hour (during flowering) is how stimulate a hermie to develop (light poisoning) so you can make feminized seeds, don't do it.

yea because hermie seeds give 50% hermies, well thnx for sharing, i really appreciate it!
