Q&A on the HLG Scorpion Diablo

Different type of Q&A, I start the questions then we go on from there. Hopefully someone will be able to help me with this problem.

How high above the canopy should the light be set?

With the black dog led they said simply "with a 4x4 tent set the light 29" above the canopy." Scorpion Diablo has a dimmer, Black Dog did not, which adds complexity to the question.

What makes this light grow better weed than any other light out there?

I don't know about all lights out there, just the lights I've used. From two grows using clones the Scorpion out grew the Black Dog by 40%.

Start by following manufacturer recommendations and get a par meter.

That's not surprising, black dog were always overpriced shite sold by marketing hype about their special spectrum.

But because your always such a nice chap I bit my tounge and kept my mouth shut .

My 650r in a 4x4 I try to keep it 2-1/2 foot above the tops , with par around 950 , but trying 1024 right now .

My 4 Blue Dream are finishing up their 2nd week of 12/12 and have stretched from about 12" to 16", with the scorpion about 16" above the canopy. Unfortunately the light won't go up anymore without adjusting the wires that hold the light up.

What dimmer setting are you using?

Where should it be?

HLG didn't just stick some LEDs on a board. They spent months building and testing differwent layouts,various LED brands, tested several boards for quality, etc. Amit is a science guy and he put a lot of research into the design and build.
Recently, HLG loaned some lights to a major grow op to test. They joked about HLG's "hobby" lights. They just put in an order for several millions dollars worth of lights! If a major grow op is impressed.........

And now Samsung is building so new LEDs exclusively for HLG! They should be in lights probably in January 2023.

The PPFD range for plants in a garden without CO2 enhancement peaks around 950 PPFD and the curve flattens by 1050 PPFD. I try to keep my plants around the 750-900 range and I've had excellent results. I run my Scorpion Diablo at full power and adjust PPFD by height not by dimming, that keeps adequate light levels at the edges of the garden ( in an open space ). In a tent dimming will do the job. Get the PPFD Meter app for Android
( apple has an ap also ) and use that to adjust your light.
Also people tend to run low light levels with seedlings. NO! Think about plants outdoors in a veggie garden. They sprout into 1700-2000 PPFD sunlight! Ido dim my light a bit for seedlings but I lower it to increase PPFD. Save some electricity, yet still blast them with lots of light. I like my seedlings in the 600-800 PPFD range. Unless you wanrt them to stretch.

I always go off PPFD readings vs manufacturer height recommendation. If you can't afford an expensive meter a good compromise is the Photone app. I have learned that most my strains seem to prefer around 300-400 PPFD in veg and 600-800 PPFD in flower. Whenever I get the PPFD to 1000+ even with co2 the buds do weird shit like foxtail and bleach.
