Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary.

Will he see his shadow this year?

When Phil saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.

Gots to be the most pot headest holiday or ceremony dat der ever did be

Sowerby? his last name is Sowerby? That reminds me of this book that was a faithful beach-vacation companion.

The latin names for the molluscs usually ended in Linné, Gmelin or Sowerby ... great 18th-century taxonomists.

I told momma once I'd like our next beach vacation to be in the Indo-pacific. That's where all the cool shells were.

I swear I had that exact same book. Got it in Virginia Beach circa 1962.

It was! I saw it again in '06 and man ... it was so built up. Sad

But the Dairy Queen of my youth was still there ... daughter had an ice cream treat at my old old spot

We also did the Fenwick Crab House ... a family tradition from at least when I was in the picture in '61
the crab house is still there too.. they got real good beer in there. compared to other places around it.. its not too built up, they still kept it nice and clean. before i got my place when i was looking i was looking for a place in bethany. right next to fenwick. but prices are outrageous there. if you ever want to come back to that area for a vacation let me know. i got a place you can stay ;)

We stayed in the Ric-Mar ( is it still there?) a coupla hundred feet north of the state line. I remember walking with dad to Bethany and back, with the sun just off the water and the beach empty but for the odd surf caster pulling sand sharks and skates. Oh memories.

Sun-drenched memory:
browned legs fly on tide's mirror -
eyes closed, old man smiles
