Provide for the common defense

The big three entitlement programs, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid make up the bulk of the budget. 23% for Social Security, 25% for Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and ACA. That leaves a measly 16% ($697 billion in 2019) for Defense. With the wars winding down, will that number come down? Odds are it will not.

Folks are already looking for the next big thing.

Are you suggesting that we are overspending on entitlement programs?

Another point of view from a non cartoon personality.

He forgot to ask “are they maneuverable?” That is the game changer. Ballistic missile defenses cant stop a hypersonic attack.

Unilaterally declining an arms race is ultimately a bad idea.

Basically it's just a faster cruise missile, so ballistic missile defenses would not work. This is a by product of those defense systems. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Let's just say the balloon goes up. If they do not use nukes on the new missile it won't make any difference. They might take out a few ships, but we have such an advantage, their Navy would be short lived. If they do use nukes, it's going to be so bad anyway, it will not make any difference.

And we have the same thing. It just hasn't been made public.

Since my early years of bomb raid drills in grammar school ( everyone under your desk).
The common defense was that if YOU launch then WE launch, Mutual destruction.

There is enough nuclear deterrent to destroy the planet over and over already .

A faster missile ....... more science and engineering jobs are created.

I need Ice-cream.

We probably have fairly good missile defenses. However they are designed for meeting a ballistic attack. Once boost is done, the bus sends the RVs on their way, at which point their trajectory is locked in.

Maneuverable warheads are a game changer. The ballistic deterrent lasted 60 years but is becoming obsolete in this age of smarter, sneakier weapons.
