Pros and cons of planting seedling directly in final container (0 transplant)

Hi, I can't find this topic but I'm sure it has been discussed before. If anyone can point me to a thread discussing this, it would be appreciated.

If not, any views on that.

Last grow, I planted my seedling in solo cups and transplanted only once after the 3rd week.

This time around, I planted my seedings directly in my 3 gallons containers. It seems do be doing fine, maybe a bit slow... but ok.

I am wondering of the pros and cons of this method. I see people keeping plants in solo cup size containers for the greater part of the flowering and do not see the advantage.

I know less transplant equals less stress so that is good, but what are the cons to have a 0 transplant method like I am trying to do?

Thanks y'all!!!

Great topic! drop some resp when I can again. Less effort, less stress, and less chance of letting little cups dry out too much are all pros. Cons could be medium stays too wet for seedling in big pot, super charged soil could be too much for seedling, wasting soil nutrients on growing a seedlling that turns out maile, gets root bound....again killer topic look forward to the responses. good luck on your grow!!

Youre in soil?

If you put a seedling in a 3 gallon pot it's going to take FOREVER to drink up all the water in that medium.... I'd start in a 1gal or even a solo cup and transplant.

I germinate my seeds directly into 5 gallon smart pots (their final pots) I see much faster growth and it also keeps you away from stressing your plants, sometimes when you transfer pots its stresses plants to a point that it actually stunts their growth for a while, which in most all our cases, sucks big time. I'd go with the planting straight into their final pots. It also gives plenty more room for root growth and expansion. Overall better IMO.

Only reason I start off small then transplant it's for space considerations when they're babies. I can pack 6 small pots under my CFL light. Then when it's time for the MH I transplant.

Thanks guys... Like the info... confirmed my instincts!!!

I will start a journal soon I think... I started with old seeds (White Rhino x Dutch Cheese) while I was waiting for my TAngerine Dream and Vanilla Kush from Barney's Farm.... They got in last week and are now all in soil. (For these I did the solo cup for now and I'll do 1 transplant into 3 gallon pot later)

The great news is that I got 100% Germ rate... I had 6 TD seeds and 6 VK seeds. I germinated the 4 worst looking seeds of each kind and kept the 2 nicest one of each for later. My 8 seeds germinated and 6 are out of soil already. The 2 other I may have screwed up myself so I guess I got lucky.

I was scared as I was reading the scary stories on here while waiting for my seeds to arrive... well not too shabby after all... keep you posted on my grow... so far it looks like 3 unsexed Dutch Cheese x White Rhino (I crossed them myself a few years back) 4 Tangerine Dream and 4 Vanilla Kush. I may give some young plant away later as I planned on growing 5 total under a 1000W HPS...
