He's just getting old and wants to be inside. An 8 yr old lab is pretty damn old, would you as a 60-80 yr old man want to be outside all day and all night?

I second this, labs are only supposed to live about that long maybe 10 years depending on the type (correct me if i'm wrong someone, just what I think is true here)

I have a theory though. Since he was an inside dog as a young one, he probably wants to be an inside dog again. Kinda like when we, as humans, do things that we did in our childhood because it helps us to stop realizing that we are getting old and are now closer to the end of our lives. Our dog is the same way, I think.

yea much agreed here too. i had a black lab as a kid, he lived to be 12. and then we had a lab/shepard mix and he lived to be around 12 too. as they got older they settle down and just want to hang around their owners all the time. when you have a dog, you and your family become their pack. dogs like to hang out with their pack...its what they do...they're not really alone type animals. if you had 2 dogs outside all the time and he had a companion it would probably be different. but they typically dont like to be alone, especially at night.

He follows me everywhere I walk, around town sometimes miles I walk and he is there beside me. I would let him inside but I am currently with my parents so that cant happen. He is healthy for his age, pink gums, and no heart worms, also he has had all his shots up to date. I have had my Chiwuawua four years so I dont think he would get jelous now, since he has been around so long. If I dont get to everyone with rep I am sorry, I didnt expect this many people to comment on my dog. Its kinda funny I got more replies about my dog than I get about my plant, or marijuana related threads.

as someone else said, dogs are pack animals and if the rest of the pack is inside he wants to be. Another thing to consider is that maybe one of the neighbors had a dog so he had some companionship outside and now that dog is no longer there. Dogs are more like people than you realize, they can get depressed and will appear very attention starved when they feel that something is wrong. I bet something changed and now he is just looking for some of that affection that the other dog is getting. Good luck with the dog. If you cant bring him in than you should spend more time outside with him, you chose him, pets are just like having children they take work and can be demanding at times.

He is real dominant, He will not let other dogs in the yard unless he knows they are our dogs. I have had to burry 2 stray pits, and 1 other lab because he killed them. He has been in lots of fights with other dogs and he has never been hurt or bitten, he either killed them or they ran away, so he is super territorial. Really though, I am not even allowed to give anymore rep I have give so much today.

I would say it's a combination of jealousy and wanting to be near you. My Golden Retriever gets jealous of my cat all the time (Her pregnancy is the reason he is outside for now. He loves the cat but is clumsy and tends to step on her a lot.). I have to sit outside with him for, hours sometimes, so he will calm down.

I have a 8yrs old black lab, and he has been a outside dog since he was 3yrs old. He has never been on a leash just runs around the yard. Well he has been acting weird lately, he has never tried to come in the house, well now we cant keep him out of the house. As soon as I open the door he is trying to come in now and I dont understand why. He has food, a dog house, and everything he would need. I thought this might be the problem, ok when he was a baby we lived in this same house and he was a inside dog then. When he turned 3yrs old we remodeled the house and he became a outside dog. I think he is getting alzheimers diesease or something I dont know please help, this dog is my baby.
He misses your company.

Let him in, and let him be your companion. ;-)

My dog is the best :)

i think the general consensus is to just let him in...if you cant do that where you're living now, its maybe time to find somewhere to live where he can be inside with you all the time when he wants, or maybe you could find a friend or family member to keep him at their house for a while until you have a place where he can come in. i really do think that theres nothing medically wrong with him...he just doesnt want to be left outside by himself. and really...would you want to be left outside all the time when your family is inside? i certainly wouldnt...i'd want to be with my family...my pack. and thats what you are to him...his pack. maybe just explain to who you're living with that this is a living creature with emotional needs, and he needs to be around his family regardless of inside or outside. im sorry if that sounded harsh in anyway...but this dog misses you and needs you. he doesnt want to be outside by himself.

I remember sombody said something about dogs can sence storms coming and pressure changes. Well I think that is what was wrong, because it has stormed here since day before yesterday and since it stopped storming my dog Shaggy hasnt tried to come in the house. I didnt think there was anything wrong with him, I just was worried about what could be wrong, if I recall the last time he tried to come in the house was right before a storm also I think. I appreciate everyones help diagnosing what was wrong, I am almost possitive it was because the storm because over the last few years he has been afraid of thunder and lightning. When a bad thunderstorm is here I go on the front porch and sit with him, smoke a fat blunt light a cig and pet my dog. If I missed anyone with rep, please rep me and I will give it back.

Its funny you say that dogs would give their life for a loving owner. One time me and my dog Shaggy were walking down a old dirt road and two red nose pits started chasing me and as I ran away from them Shaggy was running towards them. I thought he would follow me but he was trying to protect me, I turned around and grabbed a tree limb off the side of the road and went to help him out. I hit one of them and he took off, Shaggy had the other one so torn up I didnt think he would live. That was a really emotional day, when I got back home I sat with shaggy checked him out for bites and he was perfectly fine besides a small scratch over his eye. I almost started crying because shaggy risked his life for me, and that day is one reason why we are so close.

Let him come inside.
Absolutely!! I really don't understand the whole "outside dog" thing myself. My dog is like a family member, and I couldn't fathom her not being included with everything going on. I love my dog and all dogs in general. Please let him inside to be with you. He would TELL you that if he could any other way.:peace:
