Pro defoliation only!! Please no arguments.

hi all wise folks at roi.
Can anyone please show me side by side comparison pics of a plant that has been defoliate but not stripped completely bare as apposed to one left to grow naturally. Also any stories from people who have defoliated and benefited from this.

Just don't overdo it,those leaves feed and protect your plant.The leaves tell you when you have a problem and provide a reserve in times of trouble.
 
About 4 weeks into flower I trim lower bud offshoots and that's it! Consider that leaves (especially fan leaves) are the fuel and storehouse for your buds. Notice as the leaves turn light green as nitrogen etc. is used to really fatten up buds in last week before harvest. Also, any deficiencies will draw from the leaves to compensate. Want small buds then chop off all the leaves. If room to scrog yield per space from lack of penetration will still produce less then full colas in the same space if penetration exists.

I have a problem with the term defoliate.

Only because in my cannabis experience it is a fairly new term
Meaning potheads use to prune,

Then i started seeing "Defoliate"

But mostly from the guys who stripped the plants almost bare.

Now Im seeing the word defoliate in reference to regular pruning.
So I never know if the posters know the difference.

Imagine this.
I tell someone they should defoliate intending for them to just clean it up a little.
They hop on the old interwebs for more details and depending on the first thread they find might think I told them to strip the plant bare.

Yes the word can mean both if you want.
And that' why I don't like it.

My solution give an official name to the complete leaf stripping and
Just don't say defoliate for any reason for about 10 years

Some people prune,
Some strip most all of the leaf
And both of them are defoliating

Hashtag confusing

Please note im not saying one is good or bad, i get that they both exist.
Im just saying we cant call both defoliate.

I am no expert but I apply basic grandma gardening principles, when the lower shade leaves are starting to yellow, they've done all they can do for the plant and just become a detriment. At this point anyway, I'd say around even 50% yellowing of any one leaf, they usually just fall away with a light tug of the finger tips.

To me, this is effectively the same as deadheading your hanging baskets - the plants tell you when they want it done. If the foliage isn't readily falling off the plant, then it's still doing something. One must not forget that these are the light absorbers and are very much feeding the buds to facilitate growth. Again, no expert, but logic dictates to me that actively stripping your plant back of leaves is a net detriment than a benefit.

I am willing to bet that 90% of amateurs (such as myself) mistake under/overfeeding and humidity problems as being time to lollipop/defoliate the plant, when in fact it is demonstrating to the grower that it requires something else.

My growing principle is to let the plant grow as naturally as possible with minimal interference, but bombarded with the best in terms of light, heat, humidity and feed. Help to enable your plants as much as possible, but don't interfere too much - it works for me.
 
Check out how Grand Master level defoliates on YouTube it's pretty crazy but works great for his situation. I'm not a fan of growing the biggest buds I hate bud rot. I prune any big leaves that are shading lower branches it might make my tops smaller but seems to help the lowers develope and the buds get super dense

Those big leaves are the fuel for your big buds. Just as plants grow to the light that bud site will push past the fan leaf causing the shade seeking direct light giving better nod spacing with no stress/stunt to growing and still have the additional fuel macro/micro stored in the leaf for when plant needs it at last 2 weeks of flower to make the big-un!
 
I strip the plant of certain leaves before flower and then 21 days later i lolipop and leaf strip...i have a dialed in system and since i have done this i am getting average 1 more ounce per plant then not stripping...i hack, bend, train, supercrop etc....never hurt a plant....i run most of the plants i grow 0lanned for 75-80 days

What lights size space do you grow with and how many plants? It really depends on situation

After one week of drying I have the final weights :

For defoliated plants :
1) 7.6 grams
2) 7.8 grams
3) 8.2 grams

For non-defoliated plants:
1) 13.5 grams
2) 13.9 grams
3) 14.2 grams

The entire concept of "defoliation" is pure stoner lore without the least bit of botanical scientific data to back up the practice. You look at those plants and tell me that defoliating improved the lower bud growth compared to the natural plants and...oh, wait...it DIDN'T. The only thing "defoliating" did was REDUCE YIELD and waste time. If ripping off fan leaves to "let the plant focus on growing buds" was actually a viable course of action, then the plant wouldn't grow the fan leaves back that you ripped off in the first place, but it does grow those leaves back...EVERY single time...which should tell the "defoliators" something, but they never seem to get the message.

Until I see some scientific data that backs it up, "defoliating" will continue to be stoner myth perpetuated by the ignorant and desperate.

They don't become a "detriment" at all, but instead become a source of mobile nutrients and sugars the plant can either store or translocate as needed to new growth above or below ground.
 
I am doing a scrog and a regular grow. Scrog is easier to see where you defoliate but both benefit from it. Topping a plant a bunch and removing the larf and shit makes your buds bigger. True Story.

But I use larf in a magical butter machine so i let it go more than most :D

Those are some tiny little plants I think it's more beneficial to defoliate large plants

Im running a scrog again and in the past I have totally removed leaf under the screen. This time I left about 8inches.

Currently the plants are sucking them up. Yeah its unsightly but they are already there and the plant can use it.
Just seams like a waste of time and resources for me to crawl under there.

But, I have plenty circulation and environmental control so Im not worried about it causing a problem

I really understand. I let them dry off and crumble off sometimes because i can not twister my way in there. 4 x 4 tents are great until you are trimming popcorn.

Lol, yep sometimes I don't always have time to do it all the way I planned so I often learn I didn't need to.
Then I take credit for it like I invented that shit.

It's not.

Pruning is beneficial, as cutting out the smaller branches prevents those tiny buds that are only good for butter. "Defoliation" is nonsense, as every time a grower rips the fan leaves off of their plants, they just grow them right back, and I don't know about you, but I'm not in the hobby to grow fan leaves, let alone growing fan leaves multiple times on the same plant during the same grow.
