Praying Mantis And Ladybugs?

So I was thinking a lot about this for my outdoor grow this season. I was already planning on putting lady bugs, but they only eat certain insects, I figured hey, I wonder if both lady bugs and praying mantis's would be a good mix? Then, the obvious thoughts came to mind... We'll... are the Mantis's going to end up eating my lady bugs? LOL! With that said, Would I be able to use both to protect my garden? Or is it 1 or the other? Also, if it is by chance one or the other, which would be more beneficial for growing marijuana? Any advice or constructive criticisms is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Yes get them both and yes at some point when the mantis is big enough it can eat the ladybugs. But that negative is small compared to the protection both will give you.

Lady bugs usually eat all that is there, lay eggs, then fly off. Their next generation tend to hatch when the next generation of mites are hatching, if there is any. So no need for a screen to have them.
"Usually" is a very lose term. I guess if your plants are covered in bugs then they should hang out. But "if" they aren't, then there're gone. Money would be better spent just feeding and spraying with azamax. Take the guess work out of it. To each their own though.

From reports that I've seen azamax isn't 100%. Won't do any good with russet mites from what I've read. Insects are just another option from spraying your plants or another layer of protection. I'm using them both along with og bio works line up, neem, spinosid, bt and I'm sure I'm forgetting some others. That's my own:lol:. Azamax is good but I wouldn't recommend to use only that. But that's ur own:bigjoint:

Is this a medical grow? If so, there are a host of flowers that deter insects as well. Just food for thought.

Yes it is a medical grow, which type of flowers? Because not to far off I have my person garden with veggies and what not.

I would only bother is your ladies are screened in.
Ya from what ive learned, lady bugs will eat lay eggs and then constantly return, and thus constantly repopulating itself and every year comes back to your garden. Lady bugs is a must regardless of indoor or outdoor in my opinion. Was just curious about the Mantis's because Ive never messed with them before. Also, I plan on using all kinds of proper precautions to ensure the best quality of outdoor possible. But, why not add as much help as possible? Especially since this is just the start of a long term commercial grow, I in time if needed plan on using Neem oil, and what ever is necessary. However, the lady bugs and mantis's serve such a beneficial purpose. Like you said, to each their own ;)

Thanks all for your helpful insight!! This is very informative.

Will a mantis eat grasshoppers? I'm having trouble with grasshoppers and need something, but I'm not sure what to try. This is my first outdoor grow.

Any advice you could give me would be appreciated.

You are right that Azamax won't kill russets, but neither will lady bugs or praying mantis. The russets are just too small. Predatory mites are one if the best defenses against the russets because they are the right size to target the mites as a food source. Lady bugs prefer aphids and whiteflies and mantis eat bigger things like budworms. They are all good to have around but I wouldn't depend on them for much.

I learned this recipe about 5 years ago from a guerrilla grower in France. He had a big grasshopper problem and said this recipe makes them explode from gas building up in them. I guess grasshoppers can't fart, lol.

"put self rising flour and 20% baking powder in a small open bag or can at the base of the plants. They'll eat it and die and leave them alone for good (worked for me)"

Your right about lady bugs and russet mites! That's why I mentioned I use the og biowar line up as well. The size of the mantis depends on what it eats. They are pretty tiny when they hatch. Basically there is no cure all to pest problems, but there is a lot of solutions that used together can keep your garden clean.

I know this isnt the best source but if you wiki "plants the repel bugs" you'll come up with a nice list of simple plants that help deter bugs. But you can also google a bunch of other info. Have a good aunt who has never really dealt with bud worms because she has so many other flowers around. For starters, marigolds are pretty good for many insects and rabbits. Mint and spearmint are good to deter aphids and leaf crawlers.. Anyhow. Hope this helps out!!

You're going to want more predator insects than that sure Mantises are great for gardens but them nemotodes or whatever that eat mites will be good to have and I know their are other good ones. But are you legal and growing all the plants close together? Or illegal and spreading the crop out real good? close together I'd go crazy with predator insects spread out good I'd just fuck with neem oil, Azamax and shit cause the predators won't stay on just 1 plant their whole life unless they got plenty of food.

All depends on the grow style your doing on what would work best IMO.

What is a nematode? Yes its 100% legal and they will be close together, well somewhat all 30 will be within one area with at least 4-5 Sq Ft. each. Ya see thats what I figured to, they they would eat and then dip out afterwards, however, if I have a whole plantation for them to have their own balanced environment, I feel it would promote a continuous balance, as they will protect my plants, and my plants would feed and shelter them. I plan on using Neem Oil and what not regardless tho, any pets, or sicknesses I encounter, I will do the most beneficial yet safe method as to keeping my babies 100% healthy as possible.
