Is there a correct PPFD the plants should get? I'm in week 5 of flower and PPFD is about 1200. Is it a waste to run lights at this intensity?

That's perfectly fine. Full sunlight is around 1700-2000umol as a reference. I usually run around 500-700umol/s in veg and around 1200 flowering. I've heard Efficiency drops off over roughly 1000-1200 if not using supplemental CO2, something to keep in mind..

Assuming you are growing photos. Autos can get the same DLI (around 50) at 750umol over 18hrs, or 600 over 24 hours.

Look at DLI (Calculation of PPFD across the amount of light per day). There's a bunch of charts out there and also the Photone website has a DLI Calculator that's worth playing with that will tell you if you're over/under and how to adjust.
