Powerful Words

This isn't intended to be a debate thread.

Over the years, I've read different books and had important people in my life say powerful things that changed the way I thought or saw something. In a good way, I mean. Ask someone about some of the shitty things they've heard and they can probably rattle off several things. What words have had a good impact on your life?

Here is just one of my favorite quotes.

"Our spiritual journey must lead through the desert or else our healing will be the product of our own will and wisdom. It is in the silence of the desert that we hear our dependence on noise. It is in the poverty of the desert that we see clearly our attachments to the trinkets and baubles we cling to for security and pleasure. The desert shatters the soul’s arrogance and leaves body and soul crying out in thirst and hunger. In the desert we trust God or die." Dan Allander

That's beautiful.
Well, I had a very rough upbringing, wich has had much impact on my life. For this reason, these words have always had profound meaning to me:

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.

To me, that says it all.:peace:

My quote is from a book by Terry Goodkind

"Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid. People are stupid; giben proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Becayse people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true.

Very nice. I remember in the 60's and 70's, my family had these placks with AA sayings on them. This one brings back some memories. Thanks for that.

Good idea for a thread Maui, I too have come across some very profound pieces of text here on the interent, surprisingly some of it's from regular everyday people too, not just famous great minds through history...

So to start off, in the spirit of this thread, here's something I came across a while back while talking to someone about belief, I thought it was simple and really well said;

Your moral compass and my moral compass may not point to the same true north..... that doesn't make either of our norths less true.....

Also, one more bit from one of my personal heroes, Carl Sagan;

Today we communicate—routinely, casually, with hardly ever a second thought—at the speed of light. From the speed of horse or sailing ship to the speed of light is an improvement by a factor of almost a hundred million. For fundamental reasons at the heart of the way the world works, codified in Einstein's special theory of relativity, we know that there is no way we can send information faster than light. In a century, we have reached the ultimate speed limit. The technology is so powerful, its implications so far-reaching, that of course our societies have not yet caught up.

We place an overseas call, and we can sense that brief interval between when we finish asking a question and when the person we're talking to begins to answer. That delay is the time it takes for the sound our voice makes to get into the telephone, run electrically along the wires, reach a transmission station, be beamed up by microwaves to a communications satellite in geosynchronous orbit, be beamed down to a satellite receiving station, run through the wires some more, wiggle a diaphragm in a handset (halfway around the world, it may be), make sound waves in a very short length of air, enter someone's ear, carry an electrochemical message from ear to brain, and be understood.

People are afraid of their freedom to think for themselves. Embracing a lie is easier than accepting the truth. So, they're stupid. Excellent post.

The ultimate reality of the universe is not truth. The ultimate reality of the universe is relationship. If you find a thing that does not exist in relationship to something or someone else, it ceases to have meaning, no matter the truth of it's existence.
