Pot selection tip-

No not strain selection! Pot selection!

I was just re-potting some plants into the 5 gallon buckets out of the 2 gallons. I have a fair selection of 2 gallon frosting buckets pilfered from a huge industrial outlet store. depending on how much of a hurry I was in or how lazy I was or other factors each bucket or set of buckets has different hole configurations cut or drilled into them.

So in this particular bucket I had 6 large triangle holes carved into the lower side perimeter of the bucket. No holes in the bottom. upon removing the root mass which was huge and super healthy around the perimeter of the bucket I looked at the bottom of the root mass and could clearly see the roots becoming smaller twards the center of the bottom of the mass and a 3-4 in patch of brown semi-necrotic roots directly in the middle of the root mass.

I feel that this is a significant discovery in that even though the holes in the side of the bucket are quite large and the soil is allowed to dry nearly completely between waterings the center of the root mass is still subject to root rot either from poor ventilation or inability to drain. Likely a combination of the two factors.

So while I'm sure this subject has been addressed somewhere here on the sight before and I personally even knew of the requirements for ventilation and drainage. It is wise to take careful consideration of what kind of hole arrangement is in fact used in any bucket you make or pot you buy.

I have several larger pots form a nursery that only have on single hole in the bottom of the pot. This would obviously be unsuitable for growing in, in light of the current information.
