pot depth

most people agree 12 - 18 inches is the ideal depth for hole/pot size.
if i stick with the lower spectrum of 12 inch depth i could add almost a foot of width.
my issue is that i will be doing seed starts and am unsure if 12 inch depth is actually enough for a taproot.
if i was using clones i am sure 12 inches would be fine though..
anybody have input?

There are people growing huge plants in shallow pots, they work fine. Best of luck
