Hey poly. I noticed you said you use bailed coco bricks, I do also. I've used some from hydrofarm, botanicare, and root orgy. I like them because they save a lot of room, they're easier to stack in the corner until you need more coco. One thing I noticed about all three I have used was they are very dirty/salty. I put them into a 20 gallon tote and use a screwdriver to split a brick in half and soak one half at a time. When it soaks I mix it up and all the sand rocks and dirt go to the bottom then I set a bucket with holes in the bottom in my sink and flush several gallons of water through it before using it. I tested some of the run off water from the coco once and it was over 2200 tds and 1500 (or more) ppm. The guys at the store push canna coco pretty hard, but I can't pass up the value on the 10/16 dollar bales. Just thought I would mention it, the high salt content caused me some headaches r in the past. Rated 5 star.

right on, that why i got the gysum, it neutralizes salts. but giid to know anyways, but on a side note i have been using peat for the majority of things so far but i will keep that in mind when i get some to replace my soil mix with.

Gypsum? Calcium sulfate... How does that neutralize salts? It provides calcium and drainage..

dont know the particulars myself, but some how the gyspsum will bond with sodium in the soil chemically.
Sodium isn't salt...

Your links simply say that drainage is used to reduce salts... Gypsum increases drainage.. Your link speaks of saline soils (soils high in salt). If your soil is high in sodium it is known as "sodic." Soils that are high in sodium have a different electrical charge to them that prevents the electrical bonding of calcium to soil particles. So a sodic soil will not be helped by gypsum.
