Hey everyone.

Basically a iws system, clay pebbles, 6inch rockwool.
Been plagued with the same problem for awhile now and its driving me crazy!
Its like some kinda stem rot away, not root rot.. Iv tried different kinds of plugs but all seem to rot the stem away around the top of the plug so that the plant withers from taking up no nutes/water or ends up collapsing like when you see a tree trunk chopped and it falls. Didn't have this problem in soil. Somethings wearing away the stem and I haven't a clue!
Pleeease help/solutions will be very much appreciated!

What is an IWS system? My apologies, don't mean to come across as ignorant lol. Could we please get pictures? Perhaps a close up of the affected stem(s) and an overall pic of the entire plant?

lol no worries its a recirculating system.
Don't want to sound rude but cant you imagine what a tree trunk looks like when its been hacked away from all sides ready to fall? Like a hour glass sort of shape. The stem looks worn away to the core. The plants themselves are and look fine, until it deteriorates from lack of food due to this problem. Unless pics are very much needed id prefer not to upload, i use a ipad and apple retain photos.

I can imagine it, but for the sake of giving accurate information I don't like to rely on imagination. :)

found the problem. now to solve it.

i'm not a big fan of rockwool but i would think you could cut away maybe an inch away from the stem in a circle. that would let that area stay dry. all the way down to where the roots start.

Ok thanks il try that. Yea same here about the rookwool. Is there anything else you can use instead of it?

i start my seeds in rapid rooters and then transfer to hydroton.

So is there any need for the 6" rockwool? Once roots show i usually put the rapid rooter inside rockwool then into the clay pebbles.
Can you use or is it advisable to use coco in a flood n drain system if there are certain pots that can hold it? That would eliminate the need for the 6" rockwool wouldn't it?

i'd just skip the RW altogether

i've never done flood/drain with coco. only drain to waste in fabric pots for coco.

Ok cheers. il try without. Just so i know are you supposed to keep the RR dry, as in only let the roots dangle into the water or should the RR be soaking it up every feed, as thats where the problem lies (constantly wet) ?

I keep my rockwhool wet. It is supposed to naturally retain just the right ratio of air/water even if you get it soaking wet. Be sure never to squeeze it, and to always buffer it for at least a few hours by letting in soak in 5.5 ph'd water. If you can get by without the rockwhool, that'd be better. I only stick with it because I've never had any issues with it.
