Plants wont Emerge from Soil

  • Hi so I'm very new to this. I'm doing an outdoor grow. I've germinated 5 seeds in paper towel, and planted them around one inch deep in germinating soil in just a red plastic cup outside. I've been very unlucky with the weather this week. Its only been a high of like 15C each day and a low of 5C, when it should be a lot warmer. The sprouts on the seeds were also very small too, like maybe almost a centimeter. So I planted them friday afternoon, and now its wednesday afternoon. Its been 5 days and nothing has emerged. I've only sprinkled water on the soil like 3 times. I only did it when the soil was dry on top. I did poke holes on the bottom of the cup to allow for drainage. I'm guessing that it is too cold for them to grow, I put the seeds in too deep, and/or the sprouts should be longer.

    Please any suggestions?

cold weather slows things down...bring inside ...even if you have no light ..put by window...colds temp no good

Lord why Red Solo Cups... They were first done as a Challengeto experienced growers to show they can grow in anything, even a “RedSolo" cup. Why would anyone use them to actually grow with? How is that draininggoing with your daily watering?

You may have buried them too deep. It may be too cold or too wet. Lack of oxygen.

I have started a thread - How to Start Seeds.

The link is below in my signature. try it this way next time.

Thanks I think I got it now. I'm getting a few of them pop up now that I brought them inside. Should be good from now on

I'd make sure the soil is saturated as well, not just a little water sprinkled on top. It's ok to let it dry out a little, but it should all be saturated when you water. :-P

When people say not to give too much water, what they mean is not to water it one day, and then water it again the next day or before the soil has had time to start drying out. The roots need to be able to breath.

But if you don't saturate the soil when you water, the roots will grow downward straight into a dry pocket. The dryer that soil gets in the middle of the pot the more likely it will create these dry pockets. So the roots, not having any moist soil to grow into, will dry out as well.

I plant my seedlings right into 1 gal pots instead of party cups like a lot of people do. So I saturate the pot and then I usually don't have to water it again for at least 4 or 5 days under a metal halide.

Good luck!

Here's a tip water in the morning or when lights first come on this helps the top layer to dry out some and prevents mold from developing on the soil.

i also use solo cups, and skip complete germination, i just soak seeds in water for 18-24 hours then put right in the cups of soil. plant about 3/4" deep. i use my finger and just poke a little hole to the first knuckle. it takes another couple days to sprout compared to complete germination but it works fine for me.

also make sure you have a soil mix with good drainage but also can hold water. i use perlite and peatmoss in my starter mix to do this.
